Someone else took out the brushes.

The brushes were taken out and I don't know right from left and which way is right way to go back in. What will happen if I put the brushes in wrong or upside down?

Hi JUDYZ0214. I don’t know if anyone has answered your question yet, so let me give it a try. To answer you basic question, if you “put the brushes in wrong or upside down”, nothing drastic will happen. The brushes need to be installed so that they both seat correctly on the armature's commutator or you won’t get any ‘juice’ to the motor. See the illustration below:
Someone else took out the brushes. - eb76a08.jpg
I'd suggest removing them again and making sure the concave contact face rests completely on the armature’s commutator. If you've turned it 90 degrees too much, it won’t seat properly and you get no power to the motor.
It would also be helpful to have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> then enter the visitor type “Consumer” and the 6 character model number, in your case use KSM150, in the Model Number box. Select one the files listed for your model that appears under Parts List (61): KSM150PSWH0.pdf (773.44 KB) and save that file to your PC. Check to verify this matches your mixer model.
Turn to pages 8 & 9, titled “Motor And Control Parts”, which provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer’s electrical components, along with all the parts. Locate Illus No 32, Brush holder assembly that includes Illus. Nos. #21, 22, 23, 24, 25 & 26, and Illus. No. 19, Brush & Spring assembly respectively.
The Parts List illustration along with the picture above regarding the orientation of the brushes should get your mixer powered back up and operational. Good luck! I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

250 watts k45ss classic stand mixer doesn't run

My first guess would be the speed control plate. It has three screws in an upside down triangular shape. The two screws on top control and adjust speeds 1 thru 6, and often times just one screw being out a 16th of a turn will shut the mixer off completely. I would venture that when you were removing the two stud bolts you moved the adjustment screws on the speed control plate. Remember that even a slight movement can shut down your mixer, take a phillips screwdriver and turn the top left screw one quarter turn while the machine is on, it can start on you so don't be shocked and jump with a loaded screwdriver in your hand at the back of an electrical device, stay calm, if no start then try the left screw a quarter turn, if it does not start go to a half turn on each screw, if still no start turn thr screws back to the start place and try the bottom screw a quarter turn left and right, if you do not start by now, then something is wrong in another place, go back to the brushes and take them out and check how you put them in, these are the two most common problems with a no start mixer. If this does not fix your problem or get the mixer to start please come back here with more info. If you motor raced in the first place then I would suspect the phase control board, but when it came back to normal speed it leades me away from the phase board. When the phse control board goes out the mixer only works at high speed. So please let us know so that we can help further.

Mixer won't turn on. I had the pin problem everyone describes. Finally was able to get the pin back in with some serious hammering of the pin and then tightened the set screw on the bottom. Fabulous!...

They are the brush springs. The brushes get caked up with burned flour. Remove the brush caps and pull the brushes out by their springs, being VERY careful to note the position of them since they only go back in one way. Measure the free length of the spring before pulling it out. It is critical that you write down the length sticking out with very slight pressure on it so that it is seated against the armature when you measure.

Clean the curved surface of the carbon brushes with a sharp knife being careful not to scratch the curved surface. If you have them installed wrong they will not go all the way in and will not contact the armature and it will not run. Measure the length, as done above, of the spring to make sure it is in correctly!! If it is not in correctly the spring will stick out 1/4 inch longer than it should.

Took out/put back black brushs/motor wont turn on

Hi TUBEARS, from what you’re describing, I suspect that one or both of the brushes is (are) not seated properly when you reinstalled them. The brushes need to be installed so that they both seat correctly on the armature's commutator or you won’t get any ‘juice’ to the motor. See the illustration below:
ff450a7.jpg
I'd suggest removing them again and making sure the concave contact face rests completely on the armature’s commutator. If you've turned it 90 degrees too much, it won’t seat properly and you get no power to the motor.
It would also be helpful to have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use K45SSW, and select the first file K45SSWH0.pdf (341.41 KB) listed under Parts List (1) and then check to verify this matches your mixer model.
Turn to pages 6 & 7, titled “Motor And Control Parts”, which provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer’s electrical components, along with all the parts. Locate Illus No 32, Brush holder assembly that includes Illus. Nos. #18, 21, 22, 23 & 31, and Illus. No. 19, Brush & Spring assembly respectively.
The Parts List illustration along with the picture above regarding the orientation of the brushes should get your mixer powered back up and operational. Good luck! I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

I took out both the electrical brushes while cleaning my KSM90 and I think I re-inserted them incorrectly. I unscrewed each cap and took out the spring and brush, cleaned the female threads, and the male...

Hi REDEN828, yes, you are correct. When you reinstalled them you either misaligned one or both brushes so they are not seated properly on the motor's armature. See the illustration below:

How do you install brushes for the motor? I removed them and cannot remember which direction they go in. I have tried every way but the motor will not run. It ran before I removed the brushes.

With the head of the mixer upside down. Back end toward you. The right side brush should be with bevel or narrow side up. The left brush should be with bevel or narrow side down.

K45ss kitchenaid stand mixer, i took out the brushes and it wont work n=know when I put them back

jrichards - I hate it when that happens! It seems that power is not getting to the armature from the brushes so I would suspect that one or both of the brushes is (are) not seated properly. Did you remove the brushes to replace them or were you just inspecting them? I'd suggest removing them again and making sure the contacts are facing in the right direction to contact the armature. The concave contact face should be resting completely on the armature. If you've turned it 90 degrees too much, it wont' seat properly. I hope this helps... Howard, Burke, VA

Kitchen aid heavy duty 325 watts mixer won't turn on

On my K5SS mixer, the brushes are aligned with the sliced off corner at 11 o'clock on the left and at 5 o'clock on the right. So the real key is in the suggestion from Mazlynn detailing the use of a flashlight to determine where the little tabs are located inside the brush holders.

Kitchenaid 350 stand mixer power problems

I'd check the brushes. The big black screws on the side of the motor casing, easily removed, but becareful when you put them back. Here were some instructions from another site that helped me get them back in right:
The brushes in my model KP50PSBU must be insert in a particular manner in order for it to work correctly. If you remove the brushes and shine a flashlight into the hole, you should see a small detent or "stop" in one corner of the hole. Its a square hole. Match this corner with the corner of the brush which is shaved off. The brush is not square; it has one corner shaved or smoothed down. This allows the brush to fully extend into the hole. If the brush is inserted any other way, it will not contact the motor and will not run.

Recalibrating of brushes

You don't need to guess- get a flashlight and look in the hole.  You'll see a small piece of metal in each- on one side it's upper left, the other lower right.  Put in the brush so that the notch is on the same side at the piece.  If this does not work, swap sides.  This worked first time for me.
