My roadmate 1200 freezes on start - RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100

  • gmd9111951 Apr 14, 2008

This happens when on internal battery power or when using the car power adapter. I have reset the unit a few times. It still freezes up when i start it. It is a consistent problem. We were almost at the end of a 1.5 hour trip and the unit just froze. This was and is the only time it has done this but we can't get it unfroze. It worked fine up till then. None of the bug list postings helped me. I have experienced no other problems with this unit. I have had the unit since Nov. of 2007 but really have only used it 7 or 8 times. Contacted support and am waiting for them to get back to me. Googled the problem and found you guys. Thanks for the quick response I really appreciate it.

Hi gmd9111951

As one who is dependent on her GPS device, I feel your pain.

(01) Have you reset the device yet.

(02) Is A/C power applied when this happens?

(03) Does this happen when on battery power *AND* when on A/C power?

(04) If not, under what conditions does this occur?

(05) Is this a consistent problem or is it intermittent?

(06) Can you think of anything at all that precipitated or coincided w/ the onset of this problem? (firmware upgrade, installation of new maps, new SD card, etc.)

(07) Has this issue always been a problem w/ this device? Was there a period of time when this issue was not present?

(08) Are there *ANY* other issues *AT ALL* you're experiencing w/ this device?

(09) Have you spoken w/ Magellan Support? If so, what did they say?

(10) Does the "bug list" posted HERE ring any bells for you? (are you experiencing any of the same issues?)

(11) If this issue is only happening when on battery power, place the unit on A/C power and disable the 75% brightness on battery option.

Please, post back here w/ your answers, what you've tried to correct this issue thus far and any other questions or comments you might have.

Hold off on assigning ratings to any of the experts' contributions until you're all set and have no more questions for us. (Once you assign ratings the problem will be automatically closed and we'll no longer be able to assist you.)

Thank you,
BJ @:)

Can i upgrade my roadmate 1200 to include Portugal?

I also have a RoadMate 1200 and I wanted to update my map as well.

After extensive research (and periodically checking up on this every couple of months), I have found that the RoadMate series devices do not allow for any official map upgrades.

There have been reports of successful third party software installations on the RoadMate. Installing a third party software program (or "firmware") would completely change the menu on your GPS. It would be like installing Windows Vista on an iMAC. If it is possible to run an alternative firmware on the RoadMate, then it would be quite possible to download a usable map of Portugal. I have not seen any evidence of this yet. When I do I will let you know! :)

Also, an alternative firmware installation should only be done by an expert computer user. And an expert user knows that alternative firmware will void the warranty and that alternative firmware is VERY risky.

Sorry,
Steve

Freezes on start up

my usual faceatious comment to freezing GPS is to put a match under them to thaw them out.
But on a serious not i would suspect that your maps have somehow corrupted and need reinstalling
