Our receiver (pioneer vsx-405) will not power on. Push the power button once and you get the power stand by light coming on but when you hit the button again the stand by light goes off and nothing comes on.

Hello,

Usually a fault like the you ask will indicate a bad transistor in the amplification section. I suspect that the control circuit is sensing a fluctuation in the power supply and going in to protect mode. (assuming that the protect circuit itself is working properly) If a voltage is too high the unit will go in to protect mode to prevent damage to the speakers and the rest of the unit. I would take the unit in to a local repair shop and get a estimate of repair charges. Expect a 60 to 80 dollar repair charge depending on how many parts need to be replaced and what the repair labor rate is in your area.
Good luck...

I have a pioneer usx-405 reciever for a PDf407. It used to work just fine but recently whenever I power it on in keeps flashing "muting". I looked it up online and a forum said I need a remote...

You mean Vsx 405, right? Model numbers are senseless enough without typos.

Are you saying you DON'T have a remote? How did you ever set it up? There are several CU-VSX105 remotes available on eBay, one at $9.99 and expiring in a few minutes (17:12 PDT). If you get this in time you could snipe it at the last 10 seconds.

Many a Pioneer receiver will come up MUTING if it powered down Muting. It's not clear if you have been experiencing unwanted shut-downs. Unwanted Muting or any other command could well originate with an unintended remote control source. Mask the receiver so it can't see other I/R sources.

My Pioneer VSX-D704S WILL NOT POWER ON. WHEN I PUSH THE POWER BUTTON NOTHING HAPPENS. THEN THE STANDBY LIGHT COMES ON.

It is in protection and will need to be serviced. Find a local AUTHORIZED pioneer service center.

Won't power up; push power button on, hear click in back left of unti, get nothing on front display and no output from speakers; as if unit trying to operate

Disconnect the speakers and see what happens. Carefully examine the speaker cables for unwanted connections (shorts).
Take a clue from when the power problem appeared. Something was moved and made the buzz a (probable) dead short.

Stand-by light on, but receiver won't power up

Power supply problem. Most equipment today has remotes and the power supply has to remain on to sense the remotes signal.
But the actual receiver section does not get power until the remote says so or you hit the power on button on the unit. Internally the supply then feeds the device. Most likely cause is a power surge or storm.
See if the remote will power it up?
I presume this is still under warranty. If you don't have it plugged into a good surge supression outlet strip, Get one!

Vsx 305 surround sound

The stand-by light is supposed to go off when you power on the receiver. You should get the display light and you should have power on.

Stand by button flashes but receiver wont turn on

I have vsx-d812 that has an AMP ERR in error menu. the troubleshooting was found to be Q696 and Q697 in the DC prot. area on "C" board, up near front toward diplay in center of c board. You can get access to error codes on VSX pioneer unit by pressing "enter" and "adv. surr." simultaneously for 2 sec. The display should show what error code you are experiencing. I believe there are three diff. error codes. 1) AMP ERR 2) OVERLOAD 3) BOAD ERR (not mistyped) I hope this helps pinpoint error code for ya.
