Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

It could be the pump is bound up but it is more likely the motor is failing. It may be a small part such as the capacitor or the starting switch, but could also be more severe such as the winding itself. You will also want to examine the shaft where it passes thru the pump and motor and look for signs of rust from a pump seal leak.

If you are not familiar with testing these parts your best bet would be a local electric motor repair shop to see if the motor can be repaired or if it would need to be replaced. They should also be able to ensure there is no pump damage. Otherwise please reply with specific questions about what you find for more direction.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

While it is important to factor service factor and horsepower together whenever you replace a motor the example given is inaccurate. In the example used you would replace the motor with a two horsepower with a 1.1 SF, not the 1.47 as mentioned. Furthermore, a start switch will be present in any of these pump motors. The switch is different when the motor is a two-speed compared to a single speed but one is always present. The microfarad ratings given are for a run capacitor and very few of these pump motors will even have a run capacitor present. The capacitor you should check will be the start capacitor and its ratings will be given as a range, not a single value. The capacitor will be cylindrical and usually have a black, plastic-like case.

WARNING when replacing a motor on a northstar you must match the hp and service factor.. say its a 1.1/2 hp motor and the service factor 1.47 you will need a 2hp with a 1.47 service factor to replace that original motor .if you replace it with a 1 1/5 motor it WILL BURN UP THE MOTOR !!. welcome to the hayward northstar .
only the 2 speed motors have a start switch the capacitor would be my first check it may be a 30 or a 35uf at 370 cap
I think you will find it hard to find a shop that will work on this pump , its hard pump to deal with.. HINT do not over tighten the unions they can and will crack and drain your pool and run your pump dry =

OPPS "need a 2hp with a 1.47 service factor" SHOULD BE 2 hp w/ 1.00. SF.....THE FACT IS FACTORY NORTHSTAR SINGLE SPEED PUMP MOTORS HAVE NO START SWITCH! ITS CALLED A (SWITCHLESS MOTOR) ONLY THE 2 SPEED MOTOR HAS A SWITCH, START +RUN CAP ... SO YOU WILL FIND THAT THE REASON IS MOST ALL OF THE TIME IS THE RUN CAP WILL STOP THE SINGLE SPEED MOTOR FROM STARTING.. THESE ARE A HARD TO SERVICE PUMP BUT DO WORK WELL..

THINGS YOU SHOULD DO... NEVER EVER STARVE THIS PUMP FOR WARTER ! KEEP THE AREA AROUND THE PUMP SPOTLESS, KEEP YOUR SKIMER BASKET IN PERFECT WORKING ORDER. THIS MEANS NO CLORINE TABS IN THE BASKET !

My pump does not start and make a humming noise

Could be 2 reasons. If the pump is on and you are hearing a humming noise, it could be a bad capacitor. The capacitor is what starts the pump by giving it a kick start of electricity.

It could also be a seized motor, when it tries to start, it will also make a humming sound, and eventually trip the breaker.

The way to test if it seized is try to turn the motor by hand (Make sure the power is off). If the motor can't turn then it's seized.

Pump makes humming noise impeller spins slowly

sounds as if pump has stuck start winding switch , try giving Motor not the pump a sharp knock with a rubber mallet when you 1st turn on , this might jar it loose if not a new motor might be needed , if motor was larger then say 2hp then id say get it fixed at a motor repair shop due to cost saving but smaller sizes it's not worth it most times

My Polaris PB4 pump has always made more noise than the main pool pump. now it makes a high pitched sound. i took the pump apart and greased the shaft but this was unsuccessful. after reinstalling i...

The motor manufacturers do not offer cut-away or parts diagrams. Parts such as bearings are purchased thru power transmission outlets locally. Parts for the pump should be found at a local pool store that sells the equipment. You will likely need a new set of 203 bearings, a flange gasket and mechanical seal. All told, the parts should be less than $40.

I have a proline pool pump model # SD-15-1N11CC and it worked fine until I back washed my pool and now it stopped working. It makes a humming noise and nothing else.

C. MOTOR HUMS, BUT DOES NOT START—
Check for:
1. Centrifugal switch stuck in open position.or if capacitator start could be bad capacitator. Possible loose connection.
2. Binding of motor shaft. (something stuck in impeller) Does motor turn free. IF not check for jamed impeller. If it she sp2605x7 you can view a manual here:

My new AO Smith 2HP pool pump won't pump water, just hums

I'm guessing that you replaced the motor that goes to the pump, not the pump itself. You know the motor works just fine. Is the motor rotating in the correct manner(clockwise or counterclockwise) in relation to the rotation of the pump? Have you checked the pump to see if the impeller is working/rotating? Is the motor hooked up to the pump correctly, so that the motor is turning the impeller? Are all connections to the pump tight, so there are no suction leaks? Have you primed the pump and purged it of any air locks?
