Hello - If one of your four AA batteries (alkaline or rechargeable) exploded or even leaked you must get every trace of the stuff that the battery leaked into the battery compartment out.
That said, the materials inside batteries are extremely toxic and I strongly suggest that unless you have experience with such materials you take it to a local camera shop to get an estimate on what it would cost to fix.
It's a nice camera and if the repair cost is prohibitive you can find a used one in good condition on a place like Ebay for about $150.
The SP-320 uses standard AA batteries, disposable or rechargeable. If you want to use rechargeables, you should be able to find chargers at any department, electronics, or office-supply store. You can't use the camera itself as a charger, however.
If you have recently dropped the camera you may have damaged the lens
tube (housing). This damage will prevent the lens from moving properly
and will cause the camera to shut itself off after a few seconds. If
the lens is damaged the camera will require professional repair. If
the lens is not damaged, the problem may be battery related. Make sure
that
you have the correct battery type installed, and that the batteries are
fresh/fully charged. If the problem persists, you may have corrosion
on the battery contacts inside that camera that is preventing full
battery power from flowing to the camera. Remove the batteries and
wipe the inside camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy
corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sand
paper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery
compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and
reinstall them in the camera. This cleaning solves the problem about
90% of the time, and I hope it works for you.
The problem you describe is frequently due to corrosion on the battery
contacts inside the camera. Remove the batteries and wipe the inside
contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning
with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that
may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe
the ends of the batteries and replace them in the camera. This clears
up the problem about 90% of the time -- I hope it works for you.
I had the same problem but I fixed it by buying 2 rechargable CRV3 batteries and the charger. At the time such batteries were not common, so although I got a brand that I never heard of (CTA) and they have been great, They last a long time and power is no longer an issue.
Hey donoman, I am going on the assumption that these batteries are not new. Most rechargeable batteries lose their ability to hold a charge after time, and it might be time to invest in new batteries. Another cause of this could be that you are mixing older batteries with newer batteries, and by doing this the length of the charge is dependent on the weakest battery. Things that significantly affect battery life are camera flash, LCD screens, and battery temperature (the lower the temperature the quicker the battery will drain). Another thing to consider is when a rechargeable battery starts to fail they fail quickly, where disposable batteries generally have a longer life and drain at a more constant rate. It Needs a Lithium battery- only lithiums have the density to cope with the demand - no need to buy expensive Olympus Originals Try www.sevendayshop.com for starters Plenty of sellers out there.
