My Mio P550 runs TomTom correctly- TT is connected to GPS via Com2
But Memory-Map chart software will not connect with GPS, either using Com2 or(as MM makers say using the hardware port Com4).
Any suggestions please?
Works seamlessly with TT6 and Memory map 2004
what version memory map are you using?
Mitac Mio P550
Manufacturer: NMEA
Model: N/A
Port: COM2
Baud: 4800
is your baud set to 4800?
Also have you restarted and without running tt, try memory map.
Hi,
Did you try other versions of the MM software?
It is possible that the software is not compatible with the GPS reciever you are using. A visit to your local hiking/off road store etc maybe able to plug another type of GPS unit into your PDA with a different chipset in it.
Just a thought =)
The card is not the problem here.... in most occasions Tomtom and memory map seem not to coincide in their operations... these are due to usage of ports... so replacing card will not help.. Try to install them seperately and see if they both work that way
If they work you can atleast make sure that card has no probs
Yes I would replace the PDA or take it and the software to a dealer and have them put it on for you and see if they get the same problem
Please update me on the situation
take it to a dealer and have them get the software working, wherever you bought it, have them service it
Have you tried getting a dealer to get it working for you? They should help you out especially since everything that you tried still hasn't done anything. Let me know what the dealer says.
Is there anything else I can do to help you?
If not, please have a good day don't forget to rerate this solution
Sorry to hear that, is there anything else that we can do to help you out with this problem?

If memory map card is new ask replacement , it may be faulty
When I told you about a possible bad map card I was refferring to a bad map file inside, not a bad media support. If the card is faulty usually you cannot even open it. If the file is bad, even copying won't resolve the cable. If you have an old map file, or a map file on a different sd, try it opt, if it works, then is the file.
Before deciding to replace or bring the devices to service you should pass through several steps.
First try an elementary hard reset by pulling out battery (with device not connected to charger/adapter).
After this a System reinstall on PDA may solve the problem.
To troubleshoot further I need find more info on your devices system software, I will come back to you within next 24 hours.
In meanwhile, if any of the above worked, remember to accept my solution.
I just forgot, if it is the software in the card, just get the map software replaced.
Try the following reset procedure:
1. Press the joystick up, while pressing the soft-reset button.
or
2. Turn off the device on the switch next to the soft-reset button.
Press the joystick up, while turning on the again.
Release the joystick when device gets to the MIO splash screen.

Usually answered in minutes!
hadn't considered that possibility.
M-M comes on CD which I've downloaded to the PDA (blank) SD card, so I suppose it could be that the card I bought for this purpose is faulty or incorrectly formatted?- I'll try another and see what happens
I've now reloaded the MM charts onto a new 2Gb Kingston SD card ( same brand as before but different batch).
The software still shows 'Unable to open COM port', so it seems unlikely that the storage card is at fault
Having reloaded the chart software onto a new SD card, the 'Unable to open COM port' legend pops up on screen
Replace the PDA?
Thanks for the various further comments.
The Mio P550 is known to be compatible with Memory Map- it was recommended by others who use it with that software.
It is also known that Tom Tom and Memory Map use different COM ports and I have previously uninstalled TomTom and still couldn't run Memory Map.
Memory Map makers say that COM2 Program and COM4 Hardware(connect MM to this one) are the correct settings but not for me it seems.
replacing the PDA is simply not an option- this is the second PDA I've tried with similar lack of success.
Interestingly I am also struggling to get MM to work using a laptop- and serial port(COPM1) connector with a handheld Garmin GPS.screen displays 'Unable to open COM port: error 5
In conclusion I reckon this software, for me at least, is a waste of time and a lot of money too, so it's probably time to move on and forget the idea.
Thanks for your thoughts and efforts though
I must treat this a lost cause
I'm using TT5(which is not a supported product-TT6) and MM 2004 BUT the makers told me to use COM4(hardware)port. If I try COM2 I then get 'No GPS'
I don't run the two programs together and as i said I've previously uninstalled TT and still could not connect MM with the GPS
Baud rate is 4800
I don't have access to any other MM version
M-M OS Edition Version 5
Vewrsion 5.1.3, Build 716
Copyright 2005
But shouldn't MM work if, as I did, I removed TT5 completely from the device?
By the way I cannot remove TT again as I don't have the product code and last time it took over two weeks of effort to get that programme up and running again- I can't face a repeat!
Don't see any options for PDA Comm 4 driver and MM updates have been checked- however you may well be right since I'm having trouble getting the MM programme to work with GPS on this PDA and a clean, reformatted laptop too.
Maybe an idea to flag this as an issue with MM makers
Apologies for this late response but, after much ado the MM manufacturers now tell me that the COM" port is the correct one and having sent them a data txt. file from the PDA they are confident that it will work.
However, I've done a very silly thing, in that it was so slow and to be sure to get a good signal I left it out on the patio for a couple of hours, but then forgot about it and it rained overnight.
Now I've got a dead P550 -problem solved!!!
