You need to format the hdd first before you can successfully install Vista.

try booting from cd/dvd by pressing F12 on the Dell screen.

- Select optical disk drive dvd/cdrw and press Enter
- Press Any key to boot from CD or keep tapping the spacebar.
- If you see Windows Setup EMS enbaled, press Enter.
- Keep clicking next until you are asked "Where do you want to install windows?"
- Click Drive options Advance
- Click or select to highlight the partition to where you want to install Vista
- on that same windows, click "Delete" and OK
- Click "NEW" and then click "Apply"
- Click "Format" and then "OK"
- After that, you may now click "Next"
Now windows vista should be installed in your computer and on its last boot, it will ask you to create a profile (username and password).

My dell inspiron 1720 keeps rebooting. Pressed

Yes. You'll need to replace the hard drive with that error code.

No matter you can't use that computer without replacing the hard drive.

If you have a warranty for the computer contact tech support for your dell, give them the error code you have
and they will immediately replace your hard drive.

Re seating the hard drive won't fix it.

Hope this helps!

Error Code 2000-0146

I know this is not what you will want to hear, but according to the Dell Support site, error code 2000-0146 indicates: DST Log contains previous error(s). This means that the drive is failing and needs to be replaced. ASAP is best. I would suggest that you backup anything on the current drive that want to move to the new drive. If the computer is under warranty, contact Dell Support and they should ship you a new drive. If there is no warranty remaining, you will need to purchase a similar type of drive. Once you have the new drive, install it and then reinstall your software. It should go more quickly is you can use the recovery CDs that were shipped with the computer originally.

Good luck, and please let me know how it turns out for you.

Error code 0146

Alot of times when Dell replaces a hard drive, its usually one thats been refurbished and NOT brand new. Since you have been definitely been having issues with more then one of there hard drives, defiinitely call them back and have them walk you thru all the steps to verify and the once they verify it tell them because you have had lots of problems with hard drives in that unit to please make sure to ask that a BRAND NEW one is installed instead of a REFURBISHED one.

Hopefully they will do this seeing as how there has been lots of problems. Hope this info helps.
