Now 2002 is a pretty long time,and a burning small sound dangerous. You would need to service your washing machine. Checking for the health of the power cable and the parts on the panel board. If the manufacturers have a sevice center near you, consider taking your machine there. You may pay a fee for that but it will assure you that your Maytag Neptune is renewed!
