  • Anonymous Jun 09, 2010

Actually I get two lines down the center of the page. They appear everytime doesn't matter what function the operator uses (fax/copy (adf or top glass) /printing)

We already as stated replace the drum with an OEM.

The 2 lines are black. And Yes, the lines were there before and after the new drum was installed.

Are you getting these lines when copying? Or Printing?
Or both. Are these dark lines or blank lines?
If it is just when copying, try making a copy by laying an original on the glass rather than using the feeder. If this copy comes out clean then you need to clean the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) scanner glass. Just open the section where the documents are fed into and you will see a strip of glass that runs from front to back, about an inch wide. Clean this with a soft cloth and a bit of glass cleaner.
If this works then great. If not then reply back with more details and I will help you further.

Thanks for the reply. 2 questions

Are the 2 lines Blank lines or Black lines?

Did you have the same 2 lines BEFORE you replaced the drum unit?

  • Anonymous Jun 09, 2010

The only thing that can cause black streaks besides the drum unit would be the fuser unit. This is the unit that heats up and "fuses" the toner onto the paper. It is located right before where the paper exits the machine. The test for this would be to run a copy and then right as the paper starts to exit the machine turn off the power. Open the right side door and remove the paper. If the lines are at the lead edge where the paper went thru the fuser but not farther down the page where printing was applied but not fused then that would indicate a fuser problem. This is the only cause I can think of which would affect copying AND computer printing. The fact that the lines are there on computer prints rules out anything in the scanner. Dirty laser optics can affect both prints and copies but the lines would be faded/blank lines not black.

The fuser is suspect especially if the 2 lines are thin black lines. The upper fusing roller is an aluminum roller with a teflon based coating on it. If the picker fingers have worn into the teflon coating the toner will stick to the aluminum and cause the lines.

Brother MFC-440CN - print quality terrible, almost non-existent in spite of many cleaning operations.

It sounds like the printhead needs to be replaced. Brother may cover the cost of repair if you call them at 877-276-8437 and tell them the prints are "missing black ink". Very common problem that a new printhead should fix.

How do I repair a streaky lcd screen?

It depends. are the streaks from the picture, or are they on on the inside or out side of the screen of the outer screen. if its out side use vinegar and newspaper, if its inside like *** smoke (brown stains in streaks) you might be able to take the front off if your lucky! and clean it. They make it hard so you can't do this so you have to buy a new one. They can make them to last a life time now, but how would they make a profit then. top tip buy with your credit card and do not buy extended warenty,(in shop) your card covers this and you can get it for 50% less on line after. pluss you have loads of time to take it back, refund garentied with the new laws. I think 14 days, not sure?

Fax copy is streaky, almost banded looking. Copies the same too, streaky looking. Toner seems to be full, drum was replaced about 10 months ago with an after market one.

If they are black streaks and they are always in the exact same place, open the cover and clean the skinny little scanning glass. It might be ink or lint. If it's white streaks then it's in the same place but it's dried correction tape or fluid, etc.

I'm getting cyan blue streaks on print outs

The streaky marks can also be because of ink on other parts of the printer like the rollers etc.
It is more prominent when you use NON genuine cartridges, as these are sometimes refilled, with the internal pressure balance not perfect which results in ink just running out by itself.
I would recommend you have your printer cleaned by a professional, that will also replace the collection pads. (these pads collect excess ink from the cleaning process etc and once full can also cause lines) This service are in the order of $20-$50 depending on where and by whom.
You can do it yourself, if you are technically inclined, and repair / service kits (with new pads) can be obtained cheaply online as well as from ebay and usually includes instructions.

If the streaks are only from the magenta then your magenta drum is bad. If you recently replaced it, it may still be under warranty.

Streaky Copies

It dose not have a print head. But it dose have a drum. Are the streaks thin lines? Also, is only part of the copies fixed into the paper ( can you rub part of the copies OFF)? If you can rub off part of the copies - your problem is in the fixing unit. If the lines are fixed and can not be rubbed OFF you most likly need a new drum unit. Good Luck... Either way you will need a service rep. out to fix your problem
