Ink system errors are almost always fatal in these units. It's time to replace it. If it's still under warranty, cal 1-800-hp-invent and HP will replace it or send a voucher for the replacement cost including taxes. (hp does this for units where the shipping would cost more than the printer is worth...in most cases if the printer retails for under $100)
The "Ink System Failure" error is causes by air in the ink feed tubes. We have a step by step guide purging the air from the feed tubes posted on our web site. Go to our site at: www.ccl-la.com , click on the printer repair link and then the HP link. Follow the steps and you should be back printing in no time at all.
I hope this helps, If so please rate our solution.
I installed new cartriges, but my printer keeps giving me an error msg, Ink system has failed. Unable to copy, receive faxes, or print. Refer to printer documentation. Error: Oxc18a0206. What do I do now?

First check with a new set of orginal HP catridge ; if still it doesn't work then the printer needs to be replaced ; call HP if the printer is in warranty they will do it free of COST ; No. for HP is : 18004746836;
I had the same problem and took Guru NinaE advice....1. Unplug power cord from back of printer while it is on. 2. Wait for 60 seconds after it is in sleep mode. 3. Press and hold "Print Photos" and "Red Eye Removal" at the same time and while holding the two buttons down, plug in the power cord into the back of the printer. 4. The printer display should go blank or Reset might show up on the display. When this happens, touch the ON button and the printer will reset itself.
Something is wrong with your Blach carrier or connections. Use a bit of alcohol and clean the array of gold contacts where the Ink cartridge plugs in. Most of the pins are shutter and piezo control (get the ink on paper) but a few do other stuff like check ink level, # of hours runtime, etc. This is very common problem with inkjet printers. Hope this helps. Also... rub the contacts on the printhead with a pencil eraser to make them shiny and bright.
Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
Remove all the ink cartridges.
Wait two minutes.
Plug the power cord into the back of the printer.
Press the On button to turn the printer on.
Install the ink cartridges when prompted.
If the error code does not display, the issue is resolved.
If the 0xc18xxxxx or 0xc19xxxxx ink system error code displays on the front panel, service the printer.
