I purchased an Emerson microwave oven two weeks ago, used it once, and it has since stopped working. It makes noise and appears to be cooking the food, but nothing gets hot.

open it and check screws. anything that vibrates will sooner or later loosen internal screws. maybe put a locking ring on it if u find it

Return microwave oven to the place of purchase, this is clearly a manufacture defect.

If you check the manual, they are designed that way to extend the life of the unit.

I suggest you check and/or replace the door interlock switches.

there is a thermal (white ceramic) fuse located right under the cover on the top of your microwave replace it.
an electronics part store should stock it.

Clear the cook cycle when you remove the food. Some microwaves pick up where they left off, so you don't have to keep pressing buttons.

If your microwave oven doesn't seem to work at all, check these:

Fuses Usually, when your microwave oven doesn't work it all, the internal fuse (thermal fuse) is blown. This fuse protects both you and the oven. When it blows, you need to have a qualified appliance repair technician replace it.

Door switch If the fuse isn't the problem, check the door hooks and the door-release button. When these are broken, the door switch doesn't activate, so the oven can't work.

Did it make a popping noise, like a .22 cal pistol? Probably one of the larger capacitors on the power supply blew up.

if you have a warranty get a new one installed they have to honor your warranty or better yet if they want payment you want new unit sometimes they come deffective from the factory ad you may have gotten one of them

The internal cooling fan is critical. It comes on automatically whenever the oven is cooking.

If the oven is used without its working properly, the magnetron can be destroyed very quickly.

(This of course is different from the hood vent exhaust fan, which you can turn on and off at will)
