Question about Toshiba 51H84 51" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television
The set just blinks red light i foud in the furom that the convergance chips could be bad but what fuses do i chech to make sure or can they go bad and not blow a fuse
I would say that you should start by checking your internal fuses that will be located usually nearest the power cord input on the PCB. You will know these fuses because they look like normal plug socket fuses but only are glass. Look for either the bridge recifier (if on a DC signal PCB) or the power transformer that either steps up/ down the voltage to a more manageable median. When you find either of these components, the glass fuses should be fairly close by.
In addition to your question, yes these fuses can blow, but they are designed to save your components from being blown to bits by surges or spikes, even general wear and tear from thermal pressure on the glass can break the fuses.
If the internal glass fuses blow, not all of the time the fuse at your plug socket will blow, but in severe cases this is possible. In order to prevent this from happening in the future, make sure your lekky bits are on a surge protector and you maintain correct gapping/ spacing of your consumer electricals from furniture. On TV sets, you should leave at least a 45mm spacing from your set to furniture. Personal computers should be at least three times this.
If you are good with electronics and are confident that your knowledge is sufficent to overhaul/ replace the convergence chips, then make sure your DISCHARGE ALL COMPONENTS THROUGHLY BEFORE WORKING ON THE SET and ensure you use the correct IC extraction tool and tools for the job, in addition to this, an anti static wrist strap will be of good use in order to prevent you damaging your components by electrostatic discharge. Always place your components on antistatic bags (get these from computer shops) and remember TELEVISION SETS CARRY VERY HIGH VOLTAGES. so treat every component as carefully as your life, and do not attempt to rapid discharge electrolytic capacitors by shorting the terminals, the same applies for the tantalum type. If in doubt, leave the unit for 2 days to thoroughly discharge all mains electricity (unplugged from the wall, and remove the plug so nobody accidently plugs the unit in).
