Windows XP will not recognize Brother HL 2040 Laser printer
Windows cannot communicate with printer-message I get t when I I attempt to print a test page.. Printer icon is shown when I go to the control panel and check for available printers. I think the USB port is not being recognized but I do not know to fix the problem. I had a HP printer hooked to the computer be before I changed to the laser. Had not problems with the HP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could try this: unistall the HP printer driver first, uninstall the brother driver , restart pc, load brother driver with the usb cable unplugged from printer. Software will prompt for the cable to be connected to printer

Remove the printer cartridge and check for any obstructions. Then replace the printer cartridge and attempt to print again. Make sure the cartridge is fitting firmly. Check the printer menu for a cartridge cleaning option. Print a test page by right clicking the printer, selecting Printer Properties and Print Test Page.
Assuming the printer model is Brother HL-2040 then drivers for Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003 should be available from Brother's website here. That link was not working for me at the moment, if it is still down you can get the drivers from the alternative link of the opendrivers site here.
