Sometimes after I shut it down though and turn it back on, the battery is either down half way or completely dead. Why does this happen? And is there a special way you have to turn it off?

The device requires 50MB of free space to build the internal database. Make sure you have at least that much space before trying to power on again. If you do have that much space, there is likely an issue with the firmware and will require a firmware reload.
