From what I understand you are now using a new version of Internet explorer or Firefox or chrome browser, all of which use something called tabbed browsing. These browsers open multiple pages in one window as tabs. (Earlier versions of Internet explorer used to open each pages individually, and using the close button will only close that particular window). In tabbed browser each tabs can be closed. If you try to use the close button on the top right hand corner, it will ask whether you want to close all the tabs and close all tabs if answered in affirmative. To close individual tabs click on that particular tab and you will see a small X on the right hand side of that tab. Use it and only one tab will be closed.

Internet explorer is unable to handle many windows open at the same time.
My suggestion is to use Mozilla Firefox which can be downloaded for free which is safer and has much fewer errors than IE. Please update me on the situation and what internet browser you are using and I will work with you until the problem is fixed.
