Remove cartridge. Place a piece of electrician's tape over the small circular translucent window on the right side of the cartridge. Reinstall cartridge.

Go to Menu > 0.Factory Settings > Reset.

Try Restoring all settings to the factory settings

You can restore all the settings you have
changed to the factory settings. These settings will stay until you change them again.
a Press Print Setting.
b Press a or b to display Factory Reset.
c Press Factory Reset.
d Press Yes to confirm.
e Press Stop/Exit.

Try this.. It worked in my Brother MFC 7320.. SO it May work.. Open the cover. Remove Drum and Cartridge. Look inside. There are 2 LENS ON both sides. Cover the lens with a tape. Replace Drum and Cartridge. Click cancel. then click 1 for replace drum.. close cover.. Let me know if it works

Menu * 2864 (within 2 sec.), 0,1, when 'maintenance' appears, press 0,9 to exit.

I don't know about factory defaults but there is a Firmware UpDate v 2.4.0

Please push menu button then start mono then 4x arrow up. Display should be ||maintenance|| and printer should beep. What error code does the display show up?
