The camera has started to do something odd. Any white or bright parts of an image have no definition and their edges send out spikes of light making it impossible to really see anything through the lens. It's hard to describe but if, for example, you focus the camera on a white skirting board, the edge is completely blurred and spikey with white and yellow stripes and spikes. This is also recorded onto the film but film shot prior to this problem is OK. It is helped by putting the camera onto sports setting but it's still not right.

Re: sony camcorder Dcr-h18e
You need to go to the service center for replacing the
ccd image sensor...i know it is free for replacing that image sensor
cause your camera is one of the recall product due to the production
error of the image sensor...log on to the sony site and go the costumer
service cause the free replacing of that part will be expired now..

Wow, only ever seen a case like this once, maybe not same reason as your case, but the one I saw was damaged by having something bright eg sunlight directed into it's iris (camera lens) and it took out the auto light sensor part which made everything look like a burn-out, maybe pop in in to a Jesops camera shop if you are near one, see what they have to say about repair.
Unfortunately you're going to need to get some repairs done to your device, the reasoning behind the black screen on recording mode is that one of the many pieces responsible for bringing the image from start to finish has become mis-aligned.
It's either going to be the CCD sensor that has shifted or one of the lenses is slightly off angle and is sending the image off into a wall on the inside of the camcorder.
Estimated repair cost is going to be in the range of $200 USD.
Best of luck with this!
It could be either aperture is stuck or ccd imager chip is defective in your camcorder that will be replaced. In bright light, look into camera lens, turn ON in camera mode and observe does aperture open like an eye? If you notice some thing opens right in center of camcorder lens then aperture is working and ccd imager chip is bad that will be replaced. Let me know model number of your Sony camcorder to provide you ccd imager part number info. Thanks.
