If you have a external keyboard available this would probably get you out of a jam so long as there are no other issues with the laptop. The computer keyboard will need to be replaced since it is locked down.
well usually colling fans in laptops are always on. but i have encountered models that seem to temperature controlled, like the one my brother is using. as for the clearance if you can feel the heat of the laptop coming out from the keyboard, you'll need to atleast put some clearance underneath to properly disperse the heat.
i took mine apart and it looks like when you use vid out, the yellow thing, that chip will require cooling as does everything on the laptop i think the key board has a frikin' fan anyway, i have not tried this port yet so this is just a hacked guess
So the fan you see at the rear pulls in cool air for the main processor & it exhausts on the left hand side through a grill which you can see. It should spin up on power up of the laptop & you should fell air moving out of this vent. It is most likely temperature controlled so will only come on when the processor gets hot. If the laptop is running hot and the fan is not spinning you need to have it checked.
