We have recently purchased a Lexmark T642 printer. It is part of a three computer network - all computers operating in Mac OS Leopard. Once a job is sent to the printer it takes 70 sec to print - pdf, text documents, no files are very large. Driving us crazy it is so slow. Anything we print takes 70 sec, letters, envelopes .... everything. Help! What is wrong?
I've had this problem with the Lexmarks's T640 printers connected via USB to Mac OS 10.5.5 machines.
Problem: The Mac OS' default resolution of 1200 DPI for this printer causes the printer to have to rasterize the print job again AFTER it arrives at the printer. The printer does a painfully slow job of this.
Solution: Change the default resolution of your print jobs to "600dpi".
1.)Call up the printer settings menu by starting a print job and clicking the up-arrow next to "Printer" box.
2.)Click on the drop-down list with the name of your application and choose "Printer Features". Change your resolution to "600dpi". Oddly, I find that "1200dpi Image Quality" is almost as fast.
3.)It might be a good idea to "Save as" this new configuration in the "Presets" menu at the top of your list.
You should notice a tenfold increase in the time it takes the printer to actually produce print jobs now.
Additionally, in the "Color Matching" settings (you can get there by changing from the "Printer Features" settings), be sure that you are using "ColorSync" so your printer isn't having to do any additional processing in that area.

Re: Lexmark T642 Slow Slow Printing
Is the printer in sleep mode, then warms up when print jobs are sent?
If not try connecting to a windows laptop or pc to see changes, I work with Lexmarks haven't seen that one before, although sometimes they do seem to not print as fast as they use to (while printing).
you may also try reloading the driver for Mac.

I recommend you use the software you can download from the Lexmark website. Just click on this link: http://bit.ly/c4atAd. Click on the Microsoft, Macintosh, Linux/Ubuntu or Other dropdown to choose the operating system version of your computer. Download and install the software. Hope this helps.
this error is a scanner lost lock error and can be caused by the scanner or the logic board. if this error comes up immediately on power up the scanner motor is not initializing by percentages of failure the scanner is approximately 85% the logic board 15% i would change the scanner
Sounds like there is something corrupt with the driver or the wrong driver is associated with the printer. Delete the printer from the computer, but leave attached. Download the newest driver directly from Lexmark and execute the download. The computer should then automatically re-install the printer.

I too ran into this problem. Printer is about 2-1/2 yrs old. Using it as a network device. I updated firmware from a Mac OS X computer on the network.
a. Uploaded the firmware by going to lexmark site. Do this first in preparation of upgrading firmware. Follow instructions to get firmware update. b. power cycle the printer (turn off & unplug power from unit)
c. power printer and turn switch back ON. happily printer stays alive long enough to upload the new firmware update. d. Log on to your printer via a computer on your network Open a browser, address will be your printer's IP address or dns name. ex: http://192.168.1.3 (note: if you password protected the account, you will need that info) e. Follow menu to Configure -> Update Code where you will "browse" to the file on your local computer (ex: LSSTN234.FLX) and then hit the FLASH button
