Open Question

Sabrent external adapter does not work

Hi, here's what happens:

sort of same issues. documentation is feeble. hd powers up. red light is on.
but the new pc doesn't recognize the drive and, obviously doesn't assign a
drive letter to it.

i tried reversing the cable, changing the hard drive, using different usb port,
re-booting. still doesn't see the drive.

1. jumper settings are correct

2 i use vista, not win 2000 or xp

2 harddrive is old, from old computer

vista doesn't have 'my computer'
i can find manage disk management
can't right click becausse the drive isn't there

how do i change the hdd settings from dynamic to basic if i can't see the drive?

There shouldn't be any problem accessing FAT32 drives of that size.

Check your disk management (right-click "my computer", hit "manage" and then click on the "disk management")

It should tell you what kind of formatting the disk is, and what the drive-letter is.

If it shows as being FAT32, then you're fine. If it doesn't, the FAT has been corrupted and may require a disk rescue or some kind of disk fixing utility.

Assuming it shows the partition as healthy and FAT32, but it doesn't have a drive-letter, right-click on it and "change driveletter". Pick a letter and hit OK. It should now show up!

SOURCE: How to connect a IDE-to-USB cable to a 2.5 inch drive?

Well, I've got the same product and fugured that 2.5" drives work
OK with it only if 40 to 44 pin adapter with power connector used.
The 44 pin connector built into USB-2535 controller is useless.
Also connection steps should be followed meticulously:
Step 1: Connect USB-2535 adapter to a HD (3.5 or 2.5 with 40/44 pin adapter) -red LED will be "ON"
Step 2: Connect low side of the power supply to HD.
Step 3: Plug power cord into el. outlet.
Computer will see your HD as USB Mass Storage Device.

Why always the RED LIGHT?

Maybe the detection circuit for the diagnostic lights is faulty, if the disk utility found no issues I would continue using the hardware.

I applied the wrong ac adaptor to my external hardrive

Hello,

My laptop adapter delivers 4A (ampères). Examine the HD adapter, and read all markings, looking for output intensity ( a number followed by a capital A). Do the same with you computer's adapter.
If output intensity delivered by the computer adapter is higher than the output intensity of the HD adapter, chances are you have blown out a fuse inside the HD enclosure (if you have a fuse)

In addition to voltage, intensity, there is the question of polarity of the adapter (positive inside ---C+ or positive outside ---+C. You can verify compatibilties of the adapters by comparing the C with a dot on both adapters.

Hope it helps sort things out a bit.

2wire modem power light red

Its Due to AC adapter capacitors. Capators dry out after certain usage that cause unfiltered output of DC. Add about 2 or 3 pieces of 1000uF capacitor on DC way issue will be resolved. Or simple change the capacitors in AC adapter or change the AC adapter to new one.

Using sabrent 5-in-1

You can check 'Drive Management' via right-clicking 'My Computer' and clicking 'Manage'.

If you can see the drive in 'Drive Management', try changing the drive letter. Sometimes, newly added external hard drives end up having the same drive letter as an existing drive. This will cause 'My Computer' to not recognize the drive. Changing the drive letter can help.

How to connect a IDE-to-USB cable to a 2.5 inch drive?

1) You will do no harm by reversing the connector, but the PC won't "see" the drive at that point (if your drive has an activity LED it will be permanently ON if the cable is reversed) 2) Most times the USB will have enough power to drive the HD all by itself, but if you are going through a hub that may not be the case. In that situation, plug the device directly into a USB port on the PC.
