First thing's first... The situation you describing with the mouse cursor appearing but nothing else is - it's probably a problem with the operating system, but could also be a hard drive
problem or other hardware failure...
Start with opening up the computer case and having it a good clean! Make sure all the cards and add-ins are seated firmly in their places.
Download and use HDD
Regenerator to check/fix your HDD.
Also, Run Memtest+ 86 to check your memory modules (RAM) for damages.
Both programs can be found on Hiren's BootCD.
If everything seems to be OK and if you're using Windows XP, I would suggest you do a repair installation, which will install Windows over the existing installation - without any loss of data.
Just restart your computer; Put Windows XP installation CD in the drive; Enter the BIOS and make it boot from the CD drive; Boot from the CD and start setup process; Press R when prompted for a repair installation. (Pay attention: It's NOT the Repair Console! You'll have to "start setup" and then you'll have the opportunity for a repair installation).
On Windows Vista/7 there a startup repair procedure that you can run and should automatically repair startup problems... Again, you should first put the disc in the drive and boot from it.
Now, about the lock icon with the letter A - it only means that Caps Lock is on! You have absolutely nothing to worry about it.
Good luck, and sorry for the split posts,
Pelu.
