When my daughter powers up her sansa, she just sees some crazy characters...letter A's, upper and lower case with lines over them. we can't see her songs at all. Have tried removing battery, replacing it and have looked at all the settings. What are we missing?

The Characters must have any caps, all lower case.

logically that would mean capitals when capitals and small letters when small letters
this information is case sensitive so if you use lower case letter ( small ) when the character is a upper case ( capital) then it will not accept what you enter

An upper or lower case letter is considered an alpha character. A numeric character is a number. Special characters are what you see when you press the shift button and a number. There are other special characters such as ;:'"/?.>,<[{]} that are also available on standard keyboards.

1) use a pin to press and hold "reset" to clear the display
2) press and hold "S" to get a blinking underline
for each letter, press the "C" triangle until you see the letter you want, then press the "E" square to enter that letter and advance to the next letter. when done, just wait for it to timeout.

I'm unsure how to display things more than 16 letters.

Use the Tone key to set the keyboard mode for each character. You will see the mode as a, A, 1 (designating the keyboard will be entering lower case, upper case and numbers, respectively)

If you go into Start and Run and type CHARMAP and click OK, you will get the character map program. The following characters are available.

All PCL Command Sequences begin with the escape character (an ASCII control code with a hex value of 1Bh, 27 decimal) and end with the first upper case letter (or "=" note: "@" is considered an uppercase letter).
