Whirlpool WF665/1 clunking/grinding

Have a Whirlpool WF665/1 front loader that makes a loud clunking/grinding noise during any agitating and spinning during a cycle. Only had the capacitor replaced today (04/06/10) because it stopped spinning all together. Now the capacitor has been fixed it still clunks and grinds during cycle. What could it be?

Maytag Atlantis Washer makes loud noise only during wash cycle (not spin)

Top Loader? That sounds like a gearbox problem. It is not an easy fix. With that much use and those many years, it is probably time for a new one. A new High Efficiency Front Loader, will save you a fortune in water, electricity and detergent.

Try this forum though if you want to try and get it fixed.

I have a whirlpool estate top load washer and the agitator spins in only one direction and wraps all the clothes around itself. It makes a loud metallic grinding noise during the wash cycle. Not sure which...

It needs a new gearbox and clutch. It's not really the sort of job you can do yourself. The gearcase is $252, and the clutch is $51. Time for a new Whirlpool front loader. Mine is just as big and uses a tenth of the water and electricity.

Whirlpool Model #: WTW4800XQ making a loud grinding noise during or at end of spin cycle. Help!

I have a similar model (WTW4850XQ1) that was making a very loud grinding/screeching noise during the agitation and sometimes the spin cycle. I unplugged and turned it on its front to get underneath and exposed the motor/transmission unit. Took the cover off the belt drive assembly and my drive gear was loose. Simple tightening down of the nut was an easy fix for me. But some times those plastic gears between the drive pulley assembly and transmission crack or the teeth wear down (think it's called the CAM). That is a fairly cheap and easy fix as well ($35). Repair Clinic website has free videos on how to diagnose and fix issues and parts as well. Worth a look.

Admiral Washer makes loud steady noise during spin cycle but washes clothes & completes cycle. Possible bearing problem?

If a front loader type, try lifting up on the drum. If it clunks and seems to move somewhat easily, it is probably the front bearing on drum rear support shaft--a major tear-down to replace. If a top loader, try tipping the basket (that spins) in several directions--if it makes clunking sounds, try removing the agitator and check the tub mounting bolts at the bottom center for tightness. If ok, tip the tub again and watch for movement. It may have a bad bearing below the tub at the center area. Remove the tub bolts and pull the tub out revealing the drive hub underneath. Don't know if you would have to drop the transmission to repair what you find. Good luck!
