Question about Sony DAV-S400 System
I had the same problem but i found out that if you turn the sound right down just as u turn your DAV-S400 on then protect will no longer pop up!

The protect message indicates that a problem was found in the output stage of the amplifier. Unless this gets repaired, nothing will work. As a verification that the speakers or the wires are not the problem, unplug all of the speakers and try again. If protect still is displayed, the problem is inside the unit.

Tips for a great answer:
Lock/Unlock DVD player
• To lock player, open tray and press SETUP, 0, 0, 0, 8, 3 (an on-screen message, "Key
Lock On" is displayed).
• To unlock, press SETUP, 0, 0, 0, 8, 3.
This from another RCA manual but may work
