I am having the same problem as erest12. My keyboard, mouse pad and USB mouse will not work on my Acer Aspire 5100. When system boots up (Vista) will tries to start StartUp Repair, but since my mouse and keyboard do not work, I cannot select anything.
BTW - I have already had the motherboard replaced. The fan is making noise and now I have the keyboard / mouse problem

As to my knowledge...there is a chip that start wiht KBxxxx. This chip control keyboard and mouse. What you have to do is replace this chip or motherboard of your notebook. No other choice really.

Try to install the chipset driver for your motherboard. without the chipset it will not be able to recognize device/s in your computer. try also installing the driver for your touchpad (normally synaptec) try to go to :
http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/webpage.cfm?siteid=7117&areaid=2&website=AcerPanAm.com and see if there are any drivers you need to download and install in your system

try to update your bios. the voltage for your fan must be high that is why your fan could be spinning than it should. with regards to your mouse and touchpad try updating the drivers for your touchpad. go to acer website and search for the drivers of your system and try updating them directly from acer.

Unit boots up to Welcome center but once there I can't use the keyboard or mouse. I tried using an external keyboard and mouse but still nothing.

try to boot in safe mode. press F8 several times before bootup, then select safe mode. better yet safemode with networking. and did you try hooking external kb and mouse thru usb? if it proceeds, try checking online for chipset drivers and touchpad drivers at http://support.acer.com/us/en/drivers_download.aspx

The keyboard and mouse will not work when I power on my acer aspire 5100 laptop. I have no control of the computer. How do I fix this?

Try pluging in a external keyboard and mouse see if that resolves the issue, if it does then use that keyboard and go into the comtrol panel and check if something is checked off in the keyboard icon.

Keyboard & mouse are dead

I just fixed this problem by doing the following:

Hard power-off (hold the power button until the laptop turns off)
Unplug the AC adaptor
Remove the battery
Plug in the AC adaptor
Hold ctrl and turn the power on. You should arrive at a black screen.
Hard power-off again, then turn the power on.
