It is usually red, but don't go by the color, look at the battery, it has marks on it, and the positive cables will go to a box with fuses, links, never touches ground metal, the negative always goes to something metal, ground. The positive could have a yellow stripe, if the other one is all black, it cold be the hot one. If the battery is new and you don't know which way it goes because of the wires, you can test the cables with an ohm meter, don't touch the battery, don't even put it in the car, put the meter on ohm, put one end on the cable and touch the other end to bare metal, if it goes to 0, that is ground, if it doesn't move, it is pos. You can test the pos the same way, put one end on the cable and the other in the fuse box, somewhere you can find a hot wire in a dead car, don't touch the ohm meter to any voltage or you can throw it in the garbage can. Kind of hard to explain. If I was there, I could spot in a second. Hope this helps.
