Others with same problem came up with work-a-rounds.

personally I would use a linux live cd to add the required dll into the windows/i386 folder but then I'm quite comfortable with my "PUPPY" distribution, a whole OS that runs in 128MB ram making the step-processor run at full speed is sooooo cool.

Reinstall windows root system 32 hal.dll

Do a start up repair.

Insert your Windows Operating System disc in the DVD. Reboot your computer and press any key when you see the phrase "Press Any Key to Boot in CD".

Select the start up repair and it should work after the loading process.

I hope this helps.

My acer one has no cd rom and has an error report windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt <window root>\system32\hal.dll please re-install copy of the above file

You need to repair your windows, with either using Recovery or get the external CD then reinstall operating system. Hal.dll usually still in your system32 folder but corrupted..

There are about three things that might have happened. They're all mentioned at the following link:

Any Windows CD of the exact same Windows version can be used if you decide to try that route. You're really just looking to repair Boot.ini or hal.dll

Hi There,

Sounds like you're running XP bercause the hal.dll issue is almost always an XP issue. It's not the easiest thing to fix. Most often you need access to a floppy drive and floppy disc or you have to create a bootable CD that fools the computer into thinking it's a floppy with the replacement installer for hal.dll.

I recommend you read the info at the site below and decide whether to attempt the fix yourself or get assistance at your location.

Keep getting this message <window

Hello,
  • "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

  • "<Winnt_root>\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

  • "Cannot find \Windows\System32\hal.dll"

  • "Cannot find hal.dll"
The "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error displays shortly after the computer is first started. Windows XP has not yet fully loaded when this error message appears. CauseCauses of the "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error include, naturally, a damaged hal.dll DLL file or a hal.dll file that has been deleted or moved from its intended location.Additional causes may include a damaged or missing boot.ini file or possibly a physically damaged hard drive.

Please let me know you have any further questions or concerns.
Thanks.

"<Winnt_root>\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:

  1. Verify the boot.ini file is found on the computer by using a boot diskette or use your Windows CD to get to the MS-DOS "C:\>" prompt.
  2. From this prompt edit the boot.ini, verify that it is pointing to the correct operating system, and that no anomalies are found within the file. Below is a listing of what to verify
  • If only one operating system is on the computer verify that the boot.ini only has one operating system listed. In some situations an alternate configuration line may be added for the same operating system, leaving the improper line.
  • Verify that the "default=" line as well as the operating system line are the same and that they are pointing to the correct operating system.
Verify that the computer has the hal.dll file

From the MS-DOS "C:\>" prompt quickly determine if your computer has the "hal.dll" file by typing "dir hal.dll /s" at the prompt. If the computer returns a "File not found" message, the hal.dll has been deleted.

To recover this file boot the Windows operating system CD and choose the option to "Restore", "Repair", or "Recover." This option will prompt you for the Windows installation to use, the administrators password and will allow you to restore the proper file. At the MS-DOS prompt type the below command.

expand C:\i386\hal.dl_ D:\windows\system32\

In the above example "D" would be the letter of your CD-ROM drive and "C" the letter of the drive your operating system is installed on. For example, your disc drive may be D: and your hard drive is likely C:.

Error message when starting up: <Windowsroot>\system 32\hal.dll. Please reinstall a copy of the above file.

This issue happens if boot files are corrupted .. you need to have the Operating System Cd to resolve this problem . Considering you have windows xp you need to have the installation cd for windows xp .
you need to use bootcfg command to resolve the issue.

Go to bios and change the boot sequence to boot from the cd, if you are not able to boot from the cd. and then boot using windows xp cd .

Then push R to go to recovery console and use the below command

Boot to Recovery Console and rebuild the BOOT.INI file with the BOOTCFG /REBUILD
command.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt. windows root system 32 hal dll pls re install a copy of the...

Yes the hal.dll is one of the files it needs to boot up, It gets all of the hardware together..I own and ASUS and they pretty good about sending disk. Pull the disk out that came with the system. Just put it your CD and then go into Windows Explorer and look for that file. Its probably under i386 folder or Win32 folder. Once you find it then just drag it over to the c: drive and you are ready..I didn't get a cd player in mine, so you probably didn't either. I ended up buying one from Best Buy, it works really good, it's an HP.But anyway if you can copy that file over to the C: drive of your computer then you will be ok...it didn't way anything else did it> Let me know how it turn out..
