hi bill after a lot of thinking, not so much testing, i thought back to a std TV and the systom was of field collapse, my brain not being what it was, it didnt think a 3 tube projetection tv would suffer from this, turns out the IC LA7833 was at fault, i left the tv on for an hour, then turned it off all heatsinks were hot or warm, cept the one that had LA7833 attached, so i changed it, bingo.Maybe i was just lucky on this one, the pictures not all that good, sightly yellow tint on the left blueish tint on the right, not very bright, but ok ish, convergence is out on the right too, i have no remote, so i cant make adjustments, oh well, thanks for your help, regards Mark.

(1) The STK392-110 are the convergence amps, (2) they are not interchangeable with STK392-010 but you could use STK392-150 or 180 for greater reliability. They are merely the same Ic with greater amperage. (3) Yes, there are several low ohm resistors in the return circuit, out front of the convergence amps. Using an analog or digital meter test them for open or change in value and replace as needed.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems oulined below.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Blue and red wavey lines and distorted picture

Projection TV2_bing.gif sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung2_bing.gif, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith2_bing.gif, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D2_bing.gif
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash2_bing.gif focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Where are the convergence chips located on my 60PP9202 for the red

There are 2 Convergence Chips: 1 for Horizontal (it includes Red, Green and Blue Convergence channels) and 1 for Vertical (it includes Red, Green and Blue Convergence channels). Horizontal Convergence Chip is 7044 and Vertical convergence Chip is 7045 (both STK392-120). They are fixed in same "big" Heat Sink, with a 2 metal black clips, from Video Inputs board side.

Convergence not lining up

Sounds like the green is out of focus. If the focus control for the green does not control it enough to make the width the same as the red, then, the lens on top of the green can be adjusted to focus that tube. On the lens, there is a wing nut on a screw to loosen it and move the lens left or right a bit to help with the focus. Hope this helps.
