Take off the cover, you will need a watt meter or mod meter to do this. On the circuit board, part side up, look for D11, and cut one end of it, hook up meter, key the mike and with a peaking or tuning tool, while saying aaahhhhhhh in a long and steady voice, tune L12,L13,L14 for highest peak, you can get the tool there also..put cover back on and enjoy.....hope this helps...

When do you know if you have a decent radio

The 29 has a built in SWR meter--check the match to make sure it is below 2 (lower the better).

The radio can be peaked for better than factory audio.

If the squelch is up too high you will not hear people below a certain signal level---in your case set it so you hear who you want to and not jokers.

RF gain lowers signal the radio sees for receive.

The stock mic will work but make your voice somewhat flat sounding---a power mic or having the mod limiter removed will make the radio and your voice louder.

Let me know if questions.

How do I adust the watts on my cobra 29 ltd CB

Replace the 2314 driver withe a 2SC2166 driver and the final transistor with a 2SC1969 final transistor. Re-tune coils L10,L9,L8 for maximum power. Don't cut d11 like some may say to. It will turn your radio into a crappy sounding radio. Simply adjust VR4. Never cut a limiter. This will get you some solid sounding power.

How to ajust my cobra 29 to so it will get out to talk

First check the swr's. make sure you have a good antenna, like the 108" whip, others will limit your range, because they are shorter, stay with the longer 7ft types like the predator 10k, or wilson 5000 magnetic mount.
Then just adjust the modulation variable resistor for minimum resistance and it will let your radio have full output power. No cutting!!! Check it with an oscilloscope and watt meter, and check the frequency with a freq counter.
Other things, good quality echo mic. or power mic (cobraHM75$17.99), or even a RK56mic($38.99)...

Cobra 29ltd CLassic, TX power and audio is ok, volume from spkr is good, squelch works but no cb recieve.

Try a new Mic. Make sure its a working mic. If you have a bad mic, the receive will not work.

My Cobra 29 LTD sometimes does not work even though the lights remain on. In other words I can't talk on it or hear anyone even though it appears to be operational

Your mic or mic jack is faulty. Try a different mic. In cobra 29's and some other variants, when you disconnect the mic, the audio is disabled. It will still receive, and transmit(possibly) but you will hear nothing from the radio.

It could be,
  • Broken wire on the back of the mic jack in the radio.
  • Broken wire in the mic cord.
  • Disconnected wires in the mic for the switch.
  • Dirty mic connection pins.
Most likely the problem is with the mic, and not the radio.

I don't have voice, have carrier. Cobra 29 ltd

there are several things that might be responsible for the absence of modulation when speaking into the microphone. a defective mic cartridge, a broken audio or audio shield/ground wire in the mic cable or mic plug or a defective push-to-talk switch in the mic itself, for starters. if all is well here then the amc and transmitter speech stages in the transceiver will have to be considered next. locate and check with a known good mic wired for the radio in question. let me know.

How to wire a power echo mic up theres 5 wires and 4 oins

I suggest buying a 5 pin to 4 pin adapter. Ebay has them for $6. I would go chopping wires on the mic. Cobra 29 ltd is a nice radio. Have one myself.
