I just mounted my new 55" Samsung lcd television and noticed that when the screen is very dark a large section in the middle is noticeably brighter than the rest of the screen. The oval shaped section is only noticeable when most/all of the screen is very dark so for most normal television viewing it is fine. Is this an issue I need to get resolved/repaired? Or is it to be expected with these sets?
Thanks for the response, but this issue occurs from all input sources, so there is no one cable that could be causing the issue. Thanks for the response, but this issue occurs from all input sources, so there is no one cable that could be causing the issue.

Plasma screens are extremely susceptible to getting broken from any impacts to the face of the screen. What you are describing sound very much like distorted or dead pixels. It may not be a fixable issue, you may have to replace the entire unit or live with the purple bar. The reason you don't notice it as much when the screen is dark is because purple is on the darker end of the spectrum, and will be most visible in contrast to lighter ad brighter colors.

Faults & possible causes to LCD screen are given with illustrations. You can get an idea about the fault to an extent.
Check the site linked below, and see the screen shots of defective LCD TVs, Surf it with patience. This should be a panel fault I assumes. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
Your light engine will need to be replaced as you have a LCD panel failure. Here is the link to the part number for the model 50V500 if you have the 50V500A it has a different part number. http://www.partstore.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductSKU=8286849&ProductType=PART&ModelID=374014
