Hi, I have an old Apacer Audio Steno AV220 mp3-player. After deleting all visible files and folders, there are still only 11MB avaiable (out of 247MB). I guess I need to formate it(?) but how do I do that?...

Your balance 247MB files must be write protected. You will have to untick the protect tab and then delete. Or else you can connect the device to your computer and right click on the AV220 icon and click on the format command. It will warn you that you will loose all data -- just ignore it and click yes.

To unprotect

It would depend on your Operating System. If you are using Windows 98 you'll need the drivers from your CD or from Apacer's website. The CD also has tools to perform various functions which might include protecting and unprotecting your flash disk.

Problem regarding the write protection of pendrive

go onto this website and download the formatting software: http://www.apacer.com/en/products/Handy_Steno_HA202_downloads.htm
I had the same problem with an old 64MB jump drive. I did some hunting around on HWA as well as Googling other forums. The general agreement seemed to be that the drive was simply dead. I tried changing all the permissions, attrib in CMD, and even logging into Linux as "root" (the equivilent of Microsoft's "Administrator") to no avail. I was able to back the files up to another drive, and they regained their permission settings, but from what I read, the drive was simply dead.

How do I turn off the write protect on the verbatim 4gb flash drive?

1. Download this tool:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4040651/LLFTOOL.EXE

2. Format

(WARNING: After running this low level format tool,
the whole USB flash disk surface will be fully erased.
Therefore, data restoration will be impossible after using this utility!)
