I have an AKAI MPC500 that stalls during startup. I just bought it on eBay, and it came that way. I have a feeling that someone tried to upgrade the OS, and powered down during the upgrade. When I try to load the new OS to a CF card on a Mac or PC, the MPC500 says bad boot format CF and won't recognize the OS upgrade that I put on the CF card. How do I get a clean start to reload the OS

You will need a usb mixer or some other usb audio interface. Most likely whatever you purchase will come with installation instructions. Make sure whatever you get has more inputs than you need for future expansion.

You dont say what was wrong when you said it was being 'fixed' and a Hard Drive and/ or CD added.

I would very much doubt there is problem with the IDE interface UNLESS this was the original reason you were having it fixed.

I would take it to the AUTHORISED AKAI PRO Dealer to have it inspected.and a PROPER understandable report given to you if the Machine still won't accept a Hard Drive or a CD mechanism.

I would try re-installing the drivers:

And go for a firmware install as opposed to an upgrade, if it failed halfway through the upgrade you will need to load the firmware on from scratch.

to me it sounds like a loose connection or solder point is completely disconnected take it to your local shop and should take them not time to look it over. unless you feel comfortable doing it yourself. do at your own risk.

Check that your CF card is NOT biggerr than the unit allows... read the specs. A lot of equipment is having trouble with the larger memory cards. Unfortunately the smaller ones are almost non-existent.

This can have to do with several things. You might have a lot of sounds installed and have a lot of projects that you are working on. You can also have a small memory that is not improving the boot. You can expand your mpc memory, take a look at the link for an example:
