Did u try to jail break it the same can happen when an unsuccesful jail break takes place. Also double check whether if your fone is not out of charge. If you havent tried to jail break your i phone you can easily get it repaired or replaced from the dealer. Apple has excellent service

Sounds like the CFL that lights up the screen has gone out. Take your phone to a repair shop and have the screen replaced. Should be fairly cheap for a 3GS

Try resetting the phone by pressing and holding the top and home button until the screen goes black. Once the screen has gone black, try starting it normally by pressing the top and Home buttons for 1 second.

Replaced LCD screen with new one first with 3G screen remixes what I did replaced with 3GS screen turned it on and now back light doesnt work any ideas?
sounds like you have damaged the socket on the board the 3g and 3gs plugs are not compatable,
if you look at the 3gs plug the bit the the middle is thicker than the 3g.

Got the same problem. Iphone 3gs, just updated to 4.2.1. Checked mute switch, sound settings, headphone jack. Makes sound for settings, texts and ipod mode. Tried resetting "all" on phone, restore/sync with iTunes. No avail.

I don't have an iphone 3gs, but my friend had the same problem what we did was to restore it and the problem was gone.
