I have a 2004 Jetta 1.8T that occasionally shuts off and turns right back on. It usually happens when I am slowing down quickly, but it has happened a few times on the highway. Once, I had to turn the key while going 60 mph to get it started again! I took it to a Volkswagen dealership in Seattle, and they said nothing was wrong with the car. I took it to one in Boise, and they said my "battery had a short in it" , so they replaced the battery. For about 4 months, everything was fine, but the problem started happening again. Occasionally, the car won't start, yet an hour later, it will start just fine. There is nothing wrong with the alternator, and the starter tests out ok, too. It is an intermittent problem, and seems to happen randomly; otherwise, the car runs great. I also notice that the dash lights and headlights flicker a tiny bit, and the remote key will only open the driver's door when the car is acting up. I have decided that having 2 consecutive batteries with shorts inside them is just too big a coincidence and that there is something else that is causing the problem.

i would check into maybe a ful pressure regulator or maybe the fuel pump as you said before. you can always get volkswagen to check the fuel presure and run a leakdown test. or do it yourself if you have the tools to do so. the pressure should stay up even after the engine is shut down...
sounds like a gearbox bearing ,,,this sounds like a growling noise usually when accelerating although as the problem gets worse it can happen constantly ,,, wheel bearings can growl too but will give a constant noise regardless of acceleration ,,, you need to see to this quickly as the more you drive you will cause more damage and cost to you ,,,,bearings will fix it in the early stages but if more damage is done you could have to pay for new gears and shafts which is expensive
You may have a fuel leak within the fuel delivery system. Start your vehicle, after about 30 seconds shut it down and along the drivers side frame, get down and sniff for a raw (unburnt) gas smell. If you dont smell any fuel(gas) than you may need to replace your fuel pressure control valve. Thank you, and best of luck, Dana
You'll have to get it checked. Its going into limp mode. When this happens you have third gear and reverse. Its to get you somewhere to get it fixed. You can damage the tranny worse driving a lot while its like that
You have one of two very common problems.
Number one may be a stuck open EGR valve
Number two would be a failing Idle Air Control valve (IAC).
Try this: Open the hood & locate the EGR valve, close to the firewall, behind the intake. Find & take with you a small hammer. The next time that it happens, open the hood & tap on the EGR valve. If it is sticking "open" the tapping may dislodge the carbon particles that are keeping it open.When the EGR valve is open, exhaust is getting into the intake at idle, and this will def stall out the car.
There is no repair to the IAC valve, it would need to be replaced if it is bad.
One of these two scenarios will cure your problem, I see it every day.
