Go into the BIOS (press F2 during boot) , change the boot order - put the cd first and save the change, put the restore disk in the dvd, reboot, wait for the disk to launch and follow the instructions on the screen.

I have tried to do as you suggested here and to no avail! lol Ive reconfigured the BIOS so that the CDRoM will start first but it has not helped. Do I put in the DVD drive or the CD drive? And do I make the first drive cd or dvd? My cd is bootable, no scrathes or anything. Im am a total loss and ready to just take it my pc tech guy. Please help! lol

It should be listed as an optical device, but DVD drive is the same thing so it should work. Once you have changed the boot order don't forget to save the changes - don't just exit or they'll be discarded.

I have an Insignia d400a, given to me by my mother. I know it discontinued but i needed a pc so i wanted to wipe the hard drive with the dvd and Im having a really hard time. I reconfigured the BIoS to run...

It should be able to boot from the DVD or CD rom drives before checking the hard drive by default, but somebody could have changed bios settings which could cause it to not work. The factory (OEM) restore disk is DVD media, so you would need to use the DVD drive.

F2 during bootup to enter BIOS and check your boot sequence to make sure that the DVD drive comes before the hard drive. Also, the card reader on D400's tend to fail and no longer work, so it may be a good idea to dissable that from the boot sequence. The card reader can usually be found as a USB device in the boot sequence menu.

How do you clean off a computer system and reinstall original settings to start over. we have a d400a insignia computer. How is the best way to restore default settings.

Hi there!
Maybe what you mean is how to reformat your computer.
Depending on the make and model of your system , you may have two choices.

1. The first will restore all your computer's original settings, applications, and drivers, yet shouldpreserve any programs and files you have added. (The few times I've tried this have yielded very different results, so be sure your data is backed-up!) That being said, you should be able to do something like this:
Start>All Programs>System Recovery>Application & Driver Recovery.

2. The surest method is to use the Windows recovery CD that came with your machine. This method will completely wipe-out and reformat your hard drive, then do a new installation of Windows. Be sure all your files are backed up so you can reinstall them, and that you have copies of any programs you wish to reload.

I would not suggest you perform this operation unless you are knowledgeable with computers. You may suffer the risk of deleting important files on your computer. You may seek help from a qualified technician to do this.
Hope this helps!

How to restore to factory

Factory restore requires the OEM restore DVD disk.

First boot the PC and press F2 during boot to enter BIOS. Change BIOS settings to factory default, to make sure the boot device sequence and all other settings are as they should be.
Then insert the Restore DVD into the DVD-rom drive and save & exit BIOS settings. It should then reboot and load from the restore disk.

I downloaded windows XP onto Insignia 400a and need to know which drivers to download and if you have the links

If you have the original Insignia Restore DVD, then all drivers should be available automaticly, but if you are installing from a Microsoft disk, then you'll need a Realtek AC97 audio driver and an Intel 82845G video driver for the onboard chipsets.
( Sorry, you'll have to google for the driver links, Fixya's capcha, required to post links, doesn't seem to work anymore. )

All other hardware varies too much, even from the factory when these computers were new, so you'd have to either track down drivers for those, or hope that Windows can find it while checking for hardware changes and updates.

Restore dvd for d400a

Get Windows CD with a proper license and try to install the Windows fresh by reformatting the system. Before that you would need to backup your drivers. For that use which is a free software. However, the downside of this method is that you won't get any of the additional software that came included with the system, if you did get any.

Need restore dvd for insignia d400a

You can buy it from DELL. They will send it to you for between $20 to $40. Sounds like you have spyware though.

Turn the system restore off. System restore keeps everything in restore. Meaning......... If you have spyware or a virus, it will stay in your system. Run Spybot S&D (This program is free and is better than using msconfig as long as you go through the settings and change everything to the highest settings.) Then do the same with Adaware 2008 (sounds stupid to use 2 things for spyware, but one catches what the other one does not.). I have links on my website ( These links go directly to the download so you will not get the run around. You would do good to try a program called Window Washer. This is a great program that completely cleans anything in your computer that you do not need. It will not clean out anything that you have to have. I have used this for years to clean out my customers computers and have cleaned as much as 3 gigs of trash out. If you contact me I will give you some tools that I have for free that will do a great job on your computer. I have them ready to download and I will give you the link. ([email protected])

Window Washer Download.
