Your phone is probably listed as the primary phone, so if the bill was not paid in full, his phone was deactivated first. You'll have to talk to the phone service provider about fixing this, or trade phones with him.

i had the same problem with both datel heasets.
i managed to fix that problem by opening it up and replacing the internal battery with a battery from a samsung phone lol.
but now my voice sounds crackely aparently

Depending on which type of chat session you are connected to... everyone needs to be in the same chat menu. Sometimes when switching from game chat to party chat you might still be stuck in game chat while others are in private chat or visa versa.

To talk to only players in your game: Press the Guide button, then select Party, Party Options, Chat Channel, and Game Chat.

To talk to only members of the party: Press the Guide button, then select Party, Party Options, Chat Channel, and Party Chat.

To mute an individual: Press the Guide button, then select Party, the player's gamertag, and Mute.

It is a possibility that you are not in the same chat session with your friends. they might be in a party chat with others while you are in game chat. (note you can only have a max of 8 people in one party chat) Or you might still be in a party chat (that everyone else has left) and they are in game chat.

How old is your son? If he can talk, ask him what he changed it to.
If he can't, I recommend moving all your game data of whatever console you're on to an SD card or something else, and then resetting your console. Ask a question regarding what console your on's reset function, because I can't tell you each of them individually.

Check your mic settings

Had a similar issues where I couldn't always hear xbox live chat conversation. Sometimes it would work, other times it wouldn't.. not 100% sure why though.

Tried different xbox, different controller and different Turtle beach head sets with similar issues

Setting the mic output to speakers allowed me to hear what people were saying at the expence of not being able to easily control the chat volume with the analog volume control on the chat head set cable.
