I had a washer that at the beginning of the spin cycle it was fine, but when the water was half drained it would begin making a banging noise. When the draining reach the bottom and the spin speed increased it was fine. Finally found the problem - What happened was the tabs that hold the control arms for the brake had loosened. During the spin cycle especially in the middle of the cycle (when torque was at the maximum and speed was at medium. The brake spring would flex out due to compression and hit the some extended metal tab on the brake housing. Once the speed increased and the torque reduced the spring no longer hit the housing tabs. Fix the problem by bending the tabs that hold the brake control arms in place to better hold the control arms in the proper location.
Yes, the wash arm should spin freely. Recommend that you remove the arms and search for what is stopping it.
In addition to hard water, the ultra-cheapdishwasher powder really does/can leave calcium-like deposits behind. Use brand name powder for 30 days and you will see a difference. Never use gel or tablets in any dishwasher.
Adding a whole-house water softener would eliminate 90 % of your problem. The other 10% will be taken care of by not buying ultra generic powder.
It could be a motor or a pump issue. The dishwasher has a motor that attached to a pump which forces the water up into the sprayer arms and during the drain cycle, it pushes the water out of the dishwasher.
The motor (and pump) located beneath the dishwasher.
Check if motor spins. In case it spins, the problem is with the pump ,in case it doesn't spin it could be a motor problem or a motor and pump problem.
Good luck
I had this same problem. I think its the upper spray arm vibrating during wash cycle. To verify; prevent the upper arm from rotating by putting a long spatula through the top rack or zip tie the arm so it don't rotate. If the noise goes away you found your problem.
