Most probably a power unit, mother board or a processor failure. Any of the three can happen. I recommend you to take it to a tech. If there is a Dell service station take it there. If it just shut down while you were working: Have you checked the battery. Have you tried it using the direct power? Any burning marks or smell? Have you checked the Adapter also? Check them. IF you use direct power were you using a surge protector? Have you dropped it? Does the start button work well? Any abnormal thing related to the button? Have you spilt water on the machine? If all are fine then you have to take it to a tech.

Testimonial: "Very prompt response. Will take the advise of getting a techy to have a look as with all things electronic, is worth getting fixed or just biting the bullet & upgrading anyway."

Screen wont turn on , i have a inspiron 6400 .. I rang dell & my extra 3yr warranty ran out just 6 weeks ago & * They WONT HELP*

when you say screen will not turn on it means we do not have display right? now, try this. turn off laptop, press and hold D key then press power button, check if the LCD will display colors if yes then it might be your video card causes the problem which needs motherboard replacement. if no colors appear then LCD needs replacement.

Cannot get by dell screen to come back on once it hibernates

sounds like a power scheme setting is shutting off your monitor after a time-out period. sometimes monitor will not return without re-boot. change your power options settings in control panel.

Facing problem with battery of Dell Inspiron 6400

Hi,
1. Shut down the system, remove the battery and the Ac adapter from the computer.
2. Press the power on button for 10 seconds
3. Reinsert the battery
4. Power on the computer and as soon as you see the dell logo press the f2 key a couple of time
5. Using the up down arrow keys , go to the option that says battery info. If there is an error message listed kindly post it back

6. Otherwise shut down the computer reconnect the ac.adapter and check if the problem is solved

Also the battery has a diagnostic lights on it , remove the battery from the computer and press the button on the battery a set of lights would glow. If they are steady and come in a series the battery is good , If some lights are missing the battery is bad and may need replacement

Thanks

Laptop suddenly won't start

It could possibly be a bad motherboard. But before having the mobo replaced, I suggest you swap out parts from a working system to eliminate points of failure. if you don't have the parts, just remove the parts not needed for posting. this includes the hdd, optical drive, modem, bluetooth card, wireless card, and external devices. once you see the dell logo, install these devices one at a time and see what causes the problem. If you decided to have the mobo replaced, you can send your system to the depot for repairs. before this try pushing F12 when booting see if you can get onto the dell diagnostics.
