I have a Poulan 550 Series push mower, about 1 year old. Worked fine last week, went to pull start it today and the pull handle wouldn't move, feels locked up. I cheched the oil level, which is full. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Poulan 550 series self propeeled mower. Mower starts and stops running after 10 seconds. Gas tank full. Filter cleaned.

Take the cover off and see if you can pull it, if not you make have a broken recoil spring.

Hmmmm,,and the plot thickens. Without seeing the unit, i would have to think that when you pull the engine control cable bar, its not releasing the brake that sits against the flywheel. These cables do stretch. Pull the engine cover and you will see the brake against the flywheel. Pull the engine control handle and watch and see if brake is releasing. If its not, replace the cable.
That would be my bet. I hope this is of some help.

One year old bolens push mower, 550 series B&S

How is your compression? If it is low, your piston rings and/or the cylinder walls could be damaged and pulling oil up to the combustion chamber, which will burn oil and foul the plug. If you overfill the oil you could possibly get this also. When was the last time that you changed the oil and/or put oil in it? Do you currently have proper oil level?

Hi, remove the bowl off the bottom of the carby and clean it out. My best guess at this stage is that you have water in the bowl. Hope this helps, regards Phil.

Cannot find drain to change oil.

Poulon 550 yellow 22" Briggs and Stratton. It looks like you have to drain it out the cap by tipping it. There IS no plug on mine - spent 40 minutes looking for one, and I know what both types of the plug look like. What a lousy design. This mower is a piece of junk. The valve froze a week after I got it. Never again. A headache.

There are several possibilities for not starting. Water in the gas, Carburetor jet clogged ; Spark plug needs replacing, air filter needs replacing, or you have old gas. Or if you have hit something the flywheel key may be sheared. Hope this helps.
Good day.
