Error message reads "unable to

It means that the printer is unable to clean the print head number(s) 46. The print head is located under the ink cartridges. Remove the cartridges, and you should see a plastic piece with a hole in it to put your finger under and snap open. This allows you to see the print heads. The print heads look like a sponge type dabber on top of a plastic case. Grab a hold of the print head and pull it out. Look for ink that has spilled behind it or on any of the brass colored computer connections. use warm water and a lint free cloth to scrub it off. Press the print head sponge with your finger and make sure that ink primes and fills the head then put the printer back together and try a test page. If you stll get the error then you need to contact brother for a print head replacement.

Brother DPC-165C has 'Init Unable AF' error

Yup. I suspect the head has been removed from the unit. There are adjustments on some printers. It was assembled wrong. The grating noise is likely the auto cleaner. If it cannot go 'home' the unit will not initialize. Possibly the head detect sensor is broken or covered. If the head will not home (moves out and back more than once or slams home hard), 'Init Unable AF'. You may be able to order a service manual from Brother for this. A repair shop can order the manual as well. (I suspect you need a new print head as well. You might want to replace the printer) see tips on bubblejet printers.

MFC3240C says it cannot clean. No jams or foreign items in it. Unplugged several times, but still not changed. Recent upgrade to Mac OS 10.6-driver upgrade needed? Still faxes, won't print or copy.

The unable to clean message means that the ink absorber is full so it can't take any more waste ink. It's a shop repair to replace the box and enter service mode to reset the counters.

Balck ink not working

machine needs to go into a cleaning process once you installed new cartridges to identify that there is a new one placed there.it will need 5 cleanings to do that.if you are using refillables or generic cart, then it wont properly mix up with the others causing that specific color not to print

Balck ink not working

Hi Steve.
Yes your are right:
Stay away from older brother printers due to an developer mistake in the construction.

Better buy the latest modells with LC51 cartridges. Brother had learned their lesson, too and did a very good job with those new printers!!!

Give the old mfc3240 away to eBay for example.
