Hoover SteamVac brushes aren't turning ...

I'm trying to follow these instructions for removing the cover on my Hoover Steamvac: http://www.fixya.com/support/r4530769-diagnosis_fix_hoover_steamvacs_when

However, I'm having trouble getting the brush speed knob pried off, and I don't want to break it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Chris. I noticed that the assembly that broke will be replaced on the new turbine I ordered.

If I had noticed that the spring was holding things back underneath, I would have just reached under there and unhooked it. Live and learn, I suppose.

My son took apart the old turbine, and we were disappointed to see that Hoover designed those with a plastic gear being turned by a metal worm gear. There was a considerable amount of plastic dust collected inside the turbine, and the teeth on the plastic gear were worn down so far they couldn't engage with the worm gear anymore. Seems like a pretty poor design.

Sometimes this speed knob can be really stuck on there. Even if you were to break off the part that the knob sits onto, this part is actually part of the turbine assembly, and the new turbine assembly would have that prong that the button sits on.

As long as you have the screwdriver underneath of the knob, I wouldn't worry to much about putting too much pressure on it.

Let me know if you still have any questions, I'll be happy to help you figure it out.

If you found this helpful, please be so kind to rate the repair that I wrote, or leave feedback.

Thank you,

Chris Jones

    Hi,

I'm glad that you were able to get this figured out. I 100% completely agree with you that this is a terrible design. I had written the post that you mentioned above for this exact reason, this is a notorious, wide spread problem. You'd think that after Hoover realized that this part was prone to fail that they would have re-designed it, but it seems that they have an equal interest in their parts business and selling replacement turbines. What would make sense would be to sell these gears separately, so instead of having to replace the entire turbine, you could just replace the stripped gears, but that would make life to easy I guess, :-)

How do I get the hood off of a Hoover SteamVac without breaking anything? I had one answer but a key word was replaced with *s and made it indecipherable.

To clean the brushes on a Hoover SteamVac without breaking anything, follow these steps:
  1. Turn off the SteamVac and unplug it from the electrical outlet.
  2. Locate the brushes: they are usually located under the unit near the front or in the back.
  3. Remove any debris or foreign objects from around the brushes.
  4. Use a small brush or toothbrush to gently clean the brushes of any dirt or debris. Be careful not to bend or break the brushes.
  5. Replace the brushes and reassemble the SteamVac.
  6. Plug the SteamVac back in and turn it on to test if it is working properly.
If the brushes are damaged or worn out, they may need to be replaced. It is also a good idea to refer to the owner's manual for specific instructions on how to clean and maintain the brushes on your model of Hoover SteamVac.

Brushes aren't turning. switch is on

Remember that the brushes turn best when the handle is tipped back. If this does not work, remove the brush assembly and insert a flat screwdriver into the square hole that the pin on the brush usually fits into. Try to turn the fitting. If it won't turn, the air driven turbine has seized up and will require replacement.

How to change the belt?

There is no belt on a Hoover SteamVac. The brushes are rotated by an air driven turbine. If the brushes aren't spinning, you most likely need to replace the turbine assembly.

Hoover SteamVac isn't extracting solution from carpet. Motor runs and the brushes weren't turning at first but do now

That vacuum is fine on liquid extraction but often gets clogged by debris when it hits a solid. It would be better to do the clean with the steamvac then follow it with a wet/dry shop vac to be sure you got all the water. I say this because the vac built into that hoover is way too easy to clog.

Brushes do not move any more how can I access the belt area to replace or inspect

The brushes are turning by an air driven turbine. The turbine has a pivot bushing made of steel inside of it that gets rusty because of the water that is running through it. The turbine gear will have to be replaced. You can access the turbine gear by removing the hood. You can find a genuine hoover replacement part by following the link below. Just find the model number of your Steamvac.
