Can not record or playback video

If you cannot view action on the cam screen and likewise when attaching it to the TV; the video playback function has been compromised. You may be able to record as the two functions are separate from one another, however what good is recording when it cannot be played back? If the Recorded material is on a Tape or CD and you can move material to another reading device or player; then your problem is answered.

Try a head cleaning cartridge.

I have the same unit and the problem your describing comes and goes from the power switch on mine. (wiggle it)

I'm Sony tech and can help you to solve problem of CCD-TR818 camcorder.
Tap bottom of camcorder few times with your palm gently, now check playback of tape.
If problem still not solved, let me know what error code flashing on top right of view finder screen.

I have a CCD-F385E with the same problem i kept putting the tape in and out and it started working.

The icon you see is "EJECT" tape. It shows there is a problem with unit but cannot be defined without having unit checked by a pro tech

This does require disassembly to remedy the problem. There are various possible fixes. The most prevelant I have seen is cold solder connections of the board connector for the fpc cable from the top operation switch block ass'y. All you need is someone who can handle this task, like a professional. The controls that you are experiencing problems with are all linked with one cable and connector. One bad solder joint can cause serveral operation faults. Good Luck, magic seadog

Try taking off the battery and reinserting it to see if it resets mech,If this doesnt work you wil have to bring to service.Dont go at it yourself as you could cause serious problems,

my advise is that you need to take that set to qualified techn for repairs.
