Just bought a 10 year old lawn boy 2 cyl mower from my neighbor. He had not used it for 5 yrs (heart problems). I put the 2 cyl ashless oil into the gas like the instructins said 32/1 mix. That turned out to be 8 oz to 2 gal gas. Well it started fine but it is sputtering and blowing blue smoke bad. I did manage to keep it running to mow the lawn (30 min) with no change to the amount of smoke or the Low power output and sputtering. any ideas bryan

What is the model number of the mower? The picture posted by your question shows the 4 cycle Briggs & Stratton powered mower.

Did you run it for a long time? Five years would allow all gasoline to evaporate, but not the oil. You might have double the oil in the system.

If this is has the Lawn Boy OMC motor, excessive smoking can be caused by:

a worn crankshaft seal

a carbon-fouled muffler

carbon-fouled piston exhaust ports

a defective fuel primer circuit (sometimes disconnecting the primer button hose will stop the smoke ...carb work needed if this is it)

a fouled plug (causes incomplete combustion... and smoke)

weak reed valves (a constantly wet air filter is a sign of this)

An engine smoking and with low power could mean the piston rings in the engine have gone bad. May be time for a new one.

Sounds like you will need to clean your carburetor.
Sometimes you can get by with priming it a few times, and letting it
run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets,
but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
If the mower is over a couple years old, then I also recommend that you
buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will
get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, count the
number of turns it takes to seat the jets from their original position.
That way when you go to put the jets back in, you know how many turns
they were in/out.
Please do not forget to rate me, Thanks
Good Luck, I hope this helps

SOURCE: Craftsman lawnmower model 917.377070 fuel free flowing

Hey Belfest,

I'd check the fuel line or the bowl. I know it's pain to get down in there.

Remove any of the upper engine cowling that will obstruct your view.

Pour just a little fuel in at a time and look for the leak.

Since its been sitting for that long, I'm betting on a rotten fuel line

Best regards,
Mike

Missing model number tag for yardworks 19hp 42 inch lawn tractor. Has briggs and stratton engine. Maybe 5 yrs old. Any way to get model number?

You can use your engine to find estimated year. Then search whatever info is on side of mower to match with that year online.

Oil mixture for 1985f series 2 cycle lawn-boy mower

Contact your dealer ! but 32:1 sounds correct. 8 ounces of Lawnboy oil to two gallons of gasoline ....is 32:1, 8 ounces of oil to one gallon of fuel is 16:1 for the real old lawnboys,
When Toro bought out OMC,and started using Tecumseh mowers, the ratio changed in the late 80's or early nineties ! IIRC :o)

Have a self-starting, self propelled toro lawn mower about 5 years old, I ran it out of gas by accident & now it won't start

It seems to be an obstruction in your fuel delivery system. Get a can of ether and a spray a short burst of it into the breather area near the carburetor, if the mower starts up and then stalls out, then you may need to get your carburetor serviced.

After trying to run a water hose through it to clean my Toro 650 190 CC lawn mower has refused to start for me, let me add before the hose I turned it upside down to get out excess grass, Now I've...

Only tilt a lawnmower backwards toward the handle end (spark plug end raises) Other ways move the oil around to places it doesn't need to go. Now you probably have gas in the oil....check it or change it (milky looking or smells like gas..contaminated...might need changing anyway...You probably will have oil in the carb and it will blow smoke...You probably filled the oil breather with oil and it will drain down...causing smoke also. This was the wrong thing to do A 2 year old unit should be mechanically sound..Check the air filter, spark plug and carburetor for oil fouling. Remove the bowl on the carb to help get some of the oil out...it will leak gas when you do.

Won't start. Mower was in storage and unused for 2 yrs. Replaced spark plug. Still won't start.

IF you are turning it over and getting spark then your not getting fuel
2 year old gas can turn to sludge plugging the filter in the gas tank clean the tank out - blow the fuel line from the carb. back to the tank- use fresh gas she should run

I think you want the oil/fuel ratio; 50:1
Fuel/Oil Mixture
  1. Use a quality 2 cycle oil and mix it to the OIL supplier's recommended ratio. Today I use Stihl 2 cycle oil mixed @ 50:1 in a Pioneer that I purchased new in 1980. There are no gouges or scratches on the piston or cylinder and I have no carbon build up on the piston top. The manual (on stone tablets) recommends 24:1. Over the years the mixture has leaned from 24:1 (Saw Recommendation) to 28:1 (Lawn boy mower recommendation) to 32:1 (Oil provider 8oz/2gal - used for many years) and finally the last 5 (±) years 50:1 (Stihl 2.6oz/1gal)
  2. Any fuel containing ethanol is not good with chainsaws. Mix what you expect to use within a few months. Anything over 1.5 months old use up in a 4 cycle engine. HTH

Recommended oil mixture both is 20:1. Sounds like a great way to foul plugs and score cylinders to me.

Try here for your manual. Please do a search first, it has probably been asked and answered. You need only query the person that has your manual.

Lawn boy 2 cycle that smokes

Check the air breather. Make sure it is clean.

If it is clean, you will probably need to replace the diaphragm. A bad diaphragm will cause black smoke and also cause the mower to run erratically.

After seeing what you and other ASK type web sites charged to answer my question, i called the dealer he answered the question for me. i ordered the part online and repaired it myself.

My advise before you pay anyone to answer your question try calling a local repair center, i found they were willing to answer my questions without a CHARGE
