My LG combo drive is not able to read DVD.It can read CD but when I insert DVD nothing happens. I have tried this with different DVDs but nothing seems to work. Please suggest a reason and the solution for this problem.
My LG combo played DVD perfectly a couple months ago, but now I insert DVD movie and remains indiferent. I can burn CD and DVD with any type of files. I installed some CODEC software but nothing happens. yours sincerely

Yes lasers that read dvds work on a slightly different frequency so as laser wears over time, especially when burning instead of just reading it effects the ability to read and or write to DVD media and it is why reading and even writing to cds can still be done but not so with dvds. Might be time to replace it.
a different laser is used to read CDs than is used to read DVDs. The laser for you CD reader has most likely gone out of alignment. It's time for a drive replacement.
It seems that what you have is a combo drive only :( it only recognize DVD reading. no matter what driver you used. need to buy a dvd writer/ that said can write dvd.

DVD combo do not burn DVD's they can only read DVD read CD and burn CD to burn on a dvd you need a dvd writer. A DVD combo is a combination of just a DVD ROM and a CD-RW.
with some models (even of LG) you only get one drive DVD/CD-RW but in dome version it shows as two different drives DVD and CD-RW. consider this as partioning of a drive if its to be analogued to HDD (though its not partioning its just diffrent PROMS)
Hope you understand that there is nothing wrong with your combo its just that you are expecting it to be a DVD-RAM which it is not.
it may have dual laser and one that reads cd's is faulty, but try uninstalling the dvd drive first then re installing it to see if it cures it, if not the drive will need replacing.
Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete.
Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers
You can try to clean the lens with some lens cleaners that are available almost anywhere. But it's most likely that the DVD laser is no longer working. (there are different lasers for DVD and CD just to let you know...)
With DVD combo drives going down so fast in price, it might be better to just upgrade to a DVD combo lightscribe burner. (I paid $40 for one last week)
There are separate lasers for CD reading, and for DVD reading. This is why it is possible to have a drive that reads only CDs but not DVDs, or the other way around. And your particular combo unit seems to have a lot of these problems.
Since the drive doesn't work it's almost definitely a problem with the drive itself (I'm assuming that there is nothing wrong with the discs you tried to read).
If that drive is still covered by a warranty period, send it back for repairs. Otherwise, I can't see the harm in trying to tinker with it yourself as the DVD portion of it is dead anyways.
Ummm, on a side note...CompUSA is going out of business and they are selling things cheap. I got a DVD lightscribe burner for $40...booyah!
