Agree that it is a bad power supply. One thing I wanted to point about about your Dell Optiplex GX270. For a time period Dell was a Proprietary computer manufacturer. This means Dell wanted THEIR parts used, and only THEIR parts, in THEIR computers. Dell had the main ATX power cable connection, changed around on their motherboards. They also had the main power cable changed on the matching Power Supply. To explain: Dell Support>Main support page for the Optiplex GX270 series of desktop computers>Motherboard,http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/sy... Dell used a 20-pin ATX main power cable connector, on the GX270 motherboard. Shown as Number 18 in the motherboard illustration. The connector has 20 socket holes. Each socket hole has a power wire going to it. There are three main voltages produced by a computer power supply. Orange insulated wires are 3.3 Volts. Red wires are 5 Volts. Yellow wires are 12 Volts. ANY Black wire is a Ground wire. There is a Standard, as to what socket hole those individual power wires go to. Dell changed the pattern around, and it no longer fits the normal standard used. Guess what happens if you plug a wire carrying 12 Volts to a ground connection? POOF! Power Supply burns up, Motherboard, Processor, Ram Memory, and graphics card, if used, may also. Check the new power supply's 20-pin ATX main power cable connector, against the Dell 20-pin ATX main power cable connector. Make sure the color code of the wires are in the same place on the new power supply, as the Dell power supply. This is the standard color code, of a 20-pin ATX main power cable connector,http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnect...

I replaced the processor which was 2.8 with 2.4 and cleared the CMOS and after starting both the fan were working (supply and CPU).then i formatted the hard drive and installed windows xp pro but it took 10 hours to complete the installation and after that it never showed me the initial start up page.i tried with hirens bootable cd and tried with mini xp but that also is not being shown.there is a slight movement of flashes on the monitor screen for just a few seconds and then keyboard lights go off no button is working i am quite annoyed by this situation.what could be the problem? thanks

The Power On button has dual colors. Green, and Yellow. When it is Blinking Yellow, this is an indication of either Power Supply failure, or System Board failure. I believe it is the Power Supply. But there are some questions I need to ask first. 1) You replaced the 2.8GHz with a 2.4GHz processor. Why? And, is the Processor Known to be good? What Processor is it? Do you have the sSpec number? 2) Did you follow anti-static precautions when installing the Processor? What procedure did you follow? 3) What procedure did you use to clear CMOS? 4) 10 hours to try to install Windows XP Pro? After the first hour did you suppose something was wrong? Average time for install is 45 minutes. 5) Formatted the harddrive and installed Windows XP Pro. What do you mean by formatted the harddrive? 6) Do you have a multimeter to test the Power Supply with, or a KNOWN to be good, compatible Power Supply, to use as a test unit? (An economical, but decent multimeter, can be purchased for around $10 to $12. Auto parts stores are but one place that carry them)

Sounds like power supply failure. You can try removing all of the ram and pressing the power button again. If nothing happens, its either a bad power supply or a bad motherboard.

Love the A+ guy above. Trying to scare you into not doing it yourself, Fixya is probably not the right place for him to be posting.

I digress. This 270 is an interesting case. You had a failed chip you changed out and it boots but it takes forever to load windows. Ceck the motherboard for leaking and buldging caps. If you don't see any, change the ram out and boot your cd's again, I also recommend knoppix, A full boot of linux on a CD. It lets you boot and test many different things. If your ram is faulty it would cause a boot problem like the one you mentionend. you never mentioned switching the sticks around like I had suggested, if you haven't tried that, try it now. If there is a failling stick it should show up.

You need to have the Power Supply replaced on your Dell. Don't even think about repairing a power supply it caries dangerous voltages and you can get seriously injured. So just take the Dell to a Certified A + Technician Shop near where you live Local shops will often work with you if you do upgrades and repairs with them Good Luck! If you fel you can do this repair be sure to ground yourself so you dont short out your Motherboard components. and remove tyehb screws from the power supply and detach the power cables from the motherboard and hard drive and other drives optical drives CDRWs then replace and reconnect the new power supply dont buy the cheapest one getb a power supply rated higher than yoiur current one so that when you upgrade the system there is enough power there to run all the drives and devices. Good Luck Write me if you have questions I am a A+ Certified Technician with 14 years experience and I have a part time Computer Business. I had a Retail Computer Store and Repair business for over 8 years in St Petersburg ,Fl I do part-time repairs and upgrades now as well as new custom builds by request.

My Dell Optiplex 745 Desktop PC Power light orange blinking how can i solved it..

Hello,
The orange blinking on your desktop power button says that there's a problem with either the power supply or the motherboard itself.
Please refer to this link for the diagnostic lights on dell computers.
What you can do is: 1. unplug the power cord 2. press the power button, hold on it for more than 5 secs 3. re-plug the power cord on your CPU 4. test if it the system will work.
If this troubleshooting step does not help, that means it is more likely that the problem is with the motherboard.
Hope this helps!

My Dell Optiplex gx260 Pentium 4 Flat CPU doesn't Display anything, and Power light is Orange.. Please help me out

You say the power light is orange--I'm assuming that you mean the monitor.
This indicates the monitor is not receiving a signal from the computer.
Assuming that the computer actually powers up (fan runs, you can hear the hard drive being accessed, etc) then your problem lies in the video card.

If, on startup, you do see the BIOS info and maybe even the Windows splash screen before your monitor goes dark, then the problem lies in the video card drivers. In this case, starting in safe mode will work and allow you to download and install new drivers.

My computer is blinking orange light

In addition to the power supply, motherboard issues can cause the blinking power light and no boot problems. The Optiplex 270, 520, 620, 745 and 755 units are all known to have issues with capacitors on the motherboard. Here is a link to an article about this issue and what to do about it:

I hope this helps, if sol please rate my solution.

No display and wont boot

A Blinking Amber or Yellow power button means that the power supply is receiving power from the source but is unable to properly distribute it to the components. This can be caused by a defective power supply or a defective motherboard. Power supply is easier and cheaper to replace.

Reference the Power LED States
Dell OptiPlex and Dimension computers and Dell Precision workstations have incorporated the use of the multi-state power button LED as a hardware status indicator. The power button LED illuminates in two different colors and can also blink, which allows for indication of five different system operation states. (Table 1)
LED State
System State
Steady Yellow The power supply is functioning, but the system is not processing data. This may indicate an issue with the system board or CPU. Blinking Yellow The power supply is receiving power from the source but is unable to properly distribute it to the components. This may indicate a power supply problem. Steady Green This generally indicates that the system is functioning normally. However, if problems are detected with installed components, the system may initiate a beep code. Blinking Green The system is in a Standby ACPI state. Off The system power is off.
