After replacing the color wheel in my HLR6178W, the colors seem off. Peoples faces look like they all have a sun burn. I have tried to make adjustments with the color controls, still there. I think I need to access the service menu to make adjustments, How do I access the service menu?

I am having a hard time getting a picture taken of the TV screen that shows what I am seeing. At times it looks normal, then I see red shadows and blotchy faces. The colors are off.

Not sure I really notice a change in the hue. Less Red? I did write down the original settings.

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

I changed all the settings for all the colors. Should I go back and just have the Red colors changed?

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

Red-x was the only one that was set the value called out (640) and was the only I did not change.

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

The colors seem good, just the splotchey red on the faces like a rash and pink in the blue sky. I wonder if it is something else?

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

never had them before. I did take the bulb from the lamp out and put it back in. I was wearing rubber gloves. Could this be from a smudge?

What exactly do you mean by "they look like they have sun burn". Can I have an image so that I can help you access the service menu and also which setting has to be adjusted.

Woah that looks like excessive red tint and blotches. The tint can be adjusted from the convergence menu but I am not sure about the blotches as it looks like you got a faulty color wheel. A buddy of mine has loaned my service manual, I have to get it back to give you the instructions. ETA 6 hours. Hope you don't mind?

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

. SOrry for the delay. I got it back. Turn off the tv using the remote. Press the buttons Mute-1-8-2 in quick succession, one after the other. You will see the service menu. Select the convergence option. You will see 3 cross hairs Red, Blue and green. Since you have excessive purple, Start by adjusting the red crosshair, align it with the green(green is fixed and hence an ideal reference of the center). See if blue is out alignment to(since purple= red+blue) and align it with the others. That should fix the colors problem. I gotta say it looked pretty funny -she almost looks like a clown :D

I sure did and I have already posted my reply. Checkout my last post.

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

Yeah I was about say it that you gotta fire it up.

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

Thats weird! Look for the shop mode setting. Find it and turn it off. Then exit the service menu and start the tv normally . Factory settings should be restored. See if that helps. Otherwise see if you can find the convergence option in Menu-> Setup. I will go through the service manual in the mean while.

I have found a PDF version of the service manual in my collection. DO you see the option CCA(on). In that adjust the default value. It is the column starting with 640 in the image below.

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

Makesure you notedown the current values before changing anything.

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

what about the hue? Also did you note down the previous values like I told you to?

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

And I hope you only adjusted red? Can I have an image so that I can suggest further adjustments?

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

Yes and do not change anything other than red-x. I say again leave out red-y and red-Y. Change as necessary if the service manual values do not do the trick.

    Sai.

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

Ok. The watch out for the blur. Red-Y is the the equivalent of z-axis so that may be causing the blur. Change red-y and see if it does the trick.

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

Yes Like I said it sounds like a faulty color wheel. I am sure you did not have these blotches before?

  • Anonymous May 23, 2010

It is unlikely that its a smudge. Even if it were it wouldn't be so prominent. Can you get me an image so that I can see what it looks like now?

Peoples faces blurred and turn red and green. could it be color wheel?

If the colors are not matching and shapes have a red, green or blue halos, then the problem is convergence rather than the color wheel. The problem is usually fixed replacing the two convergence ICs in the alignment circuit. The replacement involves de-soldering of two old ICs and soldering new ones in places. More components in convergence board (resistors, fuses etc.) may need to be tested and replaced. The repair ad the soldering job require training and experience and must be done by a technician.

Blurred color

Hi Shirley.

As said in the previous comment the problem is convergence. Usually the two convergence ICs must be replaced. The part is not expensive but there is some labor involved in replacement. The repair is usually charged between $150 and $200.

Blue spot on screen center. Peoples faces and show blue tint

if you have a Sony LCD projection ..Theres good chance optical block needs replacing .This spot will get bigger and will eventually cover most of screen the longer you use it .needs repair. If there is no warranty on this unit..I would estimate repair around 6- 8 hundred dollars ..

Screen has major digital ditortion (green lines, heavy contrast)

Personally i haven't had this problem but it seems to be that it's either the video board or the dmd board.. if you select the service menu and it looks like the rest of the screen, it's the videpo board, if not it's the dmd board

Just purchased tv and the quality of the picture is still fuzzy tried to mess around with the resolution but it still isnt very sharp at all

Hi,
The TVs produce picture using entirely different methods. Usually the colors and especially level of black color are better on plasma, LCD will have some trouble various shades of gray and black especially shading on peoples faces etc.. This is not a defect in the LCD just a limitation in current technology.
