If you want to replace your hard drive, use WD3200BEVE. Its a 320GIG hard drive and it works perfectly. I installed one in my compaq presario v2403nr.

It's not clear the model you are asking for, so I have to give you the total WD jumper settings and choose the case that you want.

To raid, or not to raid,? that is the question............

Hi,

Always a good question,

For #1

Always a good idea to mirror your OS drive for quick recovery. So yes I would use 40GB of the velociraptor for a mirror. However if your board supports it I would actually suggest you would be better served for your dollar to buy some 500GB+ WD greens or seagate 7200.12's(do NOT buy 7200.11) then set them up as raid5, frankly you'll get redundancy and speed, with more space. 4 Greens will perform as well as three VRs and cost less.

I currently run two Greens and 2 7200.12's on my home server and the 7 rating is 7.6 for my HDD and I've got 4.2TB of space for under $500.

I mentions some of the pro's and cons in detail on my blog last week Pro's and Cons.

Hope this helps,

Chris

I have a Mad Dog hard drive enclosure that I did have a Western Digital WD400 hard drive in. Now I need to recover some data from a Western Digital WD1600. The ribbin that connected to the hard drive is...

It would cost just as much to purchase a "SERILLEL" adapter as it would cost to purchase another "empty" external hard-drive case that has support for the newer-style 'SATA' hard-drive.

If you have a newer desktop-computer, you probably have an unused SATA port on your motherboard, and an unused SATA power-connector. Temporarily connect the SATA drive to your motherboard, and do the recovery.

Vista OS computer does not see WD400 connected externally via USB to IDE cable.

Purchased a USB to IDE cable. Looked like it was communicating with the hard drive (WD400) my computer did not see the drive. (Vista OS).

Western Digital customer service recommended that I change the jumper pin to position #4 on the hard drive and install inside the computer as a an additional slave drive.

Worked perfectly.

WD400 will not boot up

The elemets hard drives are not user serviceable and thus, you may void the warranty in doing so. Have a look on their website for the data lifeguard diagnostic software and check for possible errors. he sound you may be hearing is the heads inside the drive. If you are still under warranty, you can have your drive replaced. Make sure you have your data backed up.
