RCA M4004a MP3 player problems

Turns on, says it is building it's database, then HOLD, and then shut off.
Tried the up date, but must remove battery first (battery is hard wired into unit. This is my 3rd RCA unit, and have just about had it with them. I really like the unit, it is small and, up to this point, has been working well. Any ideas? Thanks. Roger

You are right on the money. I stumbled across the "hold" button after I had already purchased another MP3 unit. Oh, well. Thanks so much for the help anyway. It is appreciated.

Mine was doing the same thing. It was on "hold" - a little button on the side that i didn't even know was there. I took it off hold and it is fine.
