Question about Cobra 29 LTD CB Radio
Make sure your squelch is not on, keep it all the way to the left and the RF Gain must be all the way to the right...

If your squelch is off and RF gain is at maximum and your still experiencing short range reception then you may have one of two possible problems, antenna or receiver damage. Check your antenna with an SWR meter, a max reading would indicate a problem that could affect both receive and transmit. If your SWR is good then most likely you have a bad component in the receiver section which could have been damaged by talking in close proximity with another CB'r. (Overloads the receiver).
Beware of CB'rs running high watts, back off a couple hundred feet or risk damage.....
