Cutting the wires seems rather ruthless when the problem isn't the wires. I do have the same problem with the headphone socket where it is cutting the sound from the speakers which is what it's supposed to do when the plug is inserted. The problem is caused by the silver contacts in the socket becoming corroded over time (Mine is now 17 years old). I suggest spraying WD40 into the socket hole and putting the plug in and out many times hopefully removing some of the corrosion. If this doesn't solve the problem then the socket (switch) will need replacing at a cost of approx. £2.00 ($4). There isn't any chip (IC) in the speaker just a switch (socket).

Two days ago this exact thing literally happened and I Evan using the system as a surroundsound system on my cinema and what's crazy is this system sounds better than most most systems even but it wouldn't make a big difference if I had to crack it open and cut the headphones jack because I don't use that anyways I have it hanging from the ceiling in the corner but you're saying that only would have to do is spray WD-40 into the hit Jack's pool and that's it and what you'll do is it will start working because I've never stop a pair of headphones is Jack ever it just stopped one day and I was troubleshooting by unhooking everything going through all the settings I thought my HDMI cables bad at first I thought it was in high definition mode

I have worked in the electronics world for 15 years, that doesn't make me an expert, but there are a few tricks are learnt that can solve a problem. I have had a tube of switch grease for over 20 years that I would use for corroded switches but not all are internally accessible, so that is why I use WD40. In the end I purchased 10 sockets (MPO) for £2.50, free postage from Aliexpress and replaced the socket.

Same issue showed up for me today very randomly...

HD comes on and off for no reason and sound cuts in and out. This fix worked for me:

1.Disconnect the left speaker from the sub woofer.
2.Take the 4 screws out on the bottom of the left speaker. (They are under the rubber matting you can just poke holes through it)
3. Remove the bottom plastic assembly from the speaker
4. Cut the 4 wires to the headset chip. Careful not to cut any others to the speakers themselves!
5. Unscrew and remove headset plug chip
6. Reassemble and plug left speaker back into sub woofer.

No more HD issues =)

This worked! In fact I didn't even need to cut all the wires. Just the 2 nearest the headphone socket front were enough (blue and grey I think). The HD sign went straght away and everything is well. Damn pleased as I really like these speakers. So simple.

HD means it has a headset plugged into the left front speaker. Maybe your speaker jack is fubarred. :/

I have Altec Lansing ada 885 I only have sub woofer can anyone tell me how to power on with out other speakers . Because I have no switch to turn on with no other speakers and also the name of he plug on...

You do have a problem as the system is controlled by the right-hand speaker. I would suggest you somehow buy an ADA885 system where the main amp/subwoofer has blown, then you will have a complete system.

Altec lansing ada885 took a dose of 240V, burned fuse in place, replaced fuse, worked for about 2 hours, now nothing

Well is the new fuse still good or out again. if its good, then you probably fried the main board on the amplifier. These computer speakers do not handel big power serge's.

Subwoofer fuse 'holder' missing.

tape or solder a piece of metal across where the fuze and holder would go.
OR
go to radio shack, pick up a small cartridge style fuze holder and an appropriate replacement fuze. (if you dont have the original fuze, dont bother with this method) Open the box or case to gain access to the circuit board. solder a new holder to the contacts.

Be aware that I have no clue what the fuze holder on that particular model looks like.

Can I hook up my ada 885 to my dvd player& my flatscreen tv?

Yes. They are essentially Similar to any other 120 Watt Surround System for Home Entertainment. The Fact is, the only major difference is that the connections are different. On The PC it uses Stereo Standard Outputs. On Your DVD Player, It Will most Likely require an adapter to RCA (red/white -usually- Audio Cables). It just depends on your DVD Player. Have Fun!..... :)

Altec Lansing ADA 885

Hi,

Thanks for posting direct. As you posted, the Sony XBR has only left & right (white/red) outputs whereas your Altec ADA has multiple INputs. This leaves us with no other option but to used just the green INput of the Altec as the black and the S/PDIF has nowhere to be connected to in the Sony.

You would need to use a phone stereo to RCA cable/connector as shown below. Additionally, you would have to set up your speakers as suggested here.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
